With a $301M contract, Johnny Depp could reprise his Captain Jack "Pirates" role

By: April Carson

To change a well-known line from Johnny Depp's most popular franchise: "This is the day you will always remember as the day you nearly canceled Captain Jack Sparrow."

Johnny Depp has been offered more than $300 million to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise after being unceremoniously dismissed from the series in 2018 amid abuse allegations by ex Amber Heard. According to a source close to Disney, a new interview with Aussie outlet Poptopic has Depp potentially reprising his role as the lovable scoundrel in a fifth “Pirates” movie.

The source goes on to say that, although the deal is not yet finalized, Depp is expected to sign on for the project and that filming could begin as early as 2019. This would be a huge turnaround for the actor, who was let go from the franchise after just one movie following Heard’s allegations of domestic abuse.

This potential new deal comes as a bit of a surprise, given the circumstances under which Depp was fired from the franchise. In 2018, Heard accused Depp of domestic abuse, and she provided photographic evidence of her injuries to the court. Depp denied the allegations, but he was ultimately let go from the franchise.

If Depp does sign on for the fifth “Pirates” movie, it would mark a significant payday for the actor. His last contract for the franchise earned him a reported $55 million, but with box office grosses dwindling with each successive installment, it’s unlikely that he would be able to command the same salary.

In the wake of 36-year-old Heard's 2018 Washington Post op-ed, which Depp claimed defamed him as a domestic abuser, Disney dropped him from the sixth and final installment of "Pirates" films after 19 years. This is said to have resulted in Depp losing out on a $22.5 million payday.

But, following Depp's recent legal victory against the studio over his character's depiction in The Assassination of Caesar, it appears that Disney may be ready to bring him back into the franchise.

“Disney is really interested in repairing its relationship with Johnny Depp. They made contact with the actor before his defamation case against Amber Heard and inquired whether he would be willing to return for another ‘Pirates'” film or two, according to a Poptopic source.

According to the E! network, a source connected to Depp told NBC News that "this is made up" — but reps for Depp and Disney have yet to respond to The Post's request for confirmation.

Meanwhile, the report states that Depp is expected to "return as Jack Sparrow in 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6' and a spin-off Disney+ series about the early life of the Captain of the Black Pearl," with a reported $301 million comeback deal.

“The studio has already written up a script for a film about Jack Sparrow, so they are optimistic that Johnny will forgive them and reprise his iconic role," the source said. Depp's return to the "Pirates" franchise would mark a major reversal for the actor, who was unceremoniously axed from the films in 2018 amid mounting financial and personal problems.

“I absolutely believe post-verdict that ‘Pirates' is ready for a reboot with Johnny as Captain Jack aboard,” the source told People magazine in an interview earlier this month. They added, “There's just too much financial gold on the market for a beloved character entrenched in the Disney culture.”

In July, a jury in Virginia awarded more than $10 million to Johnny Depp in his defamation lawsuit against Heard. The court found that Heard was responsible for defaming Depp, and it awarded her $2 million in damages.

“I don’t think Disney would have any problem writing a big check to get him back for another ‘Pirates’ movie,” the producer said. “They know he is bankable and brings in a huge audience.”

It’s unclear whether or not Depp would be interested in returning to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor has been largely absent from the public eye since his highly-publicized divorce from Amber Heard.
