Astronomers may have discovered the presence of water in the atmosphere of a blisteringly hot planet that is also one of the most "metal" worlds ever spotted. This exoplanet, HD 149026 b, known as "Smertrios," could have its mysterious formation unveiled through this discovery.
Smertrios: The Purveyor of Mysteries
Smertrios, named after the Gaelic god of war, orbits a yellow subgiant star called HD 149026, around 247 light-years from Earth. This fascinating exoplanet is situated just 4 million miles from its parent star, completing its orbit in under three Earth days. Despite being only three-quarters the width of Jupiter, Smertrios is categorized as a "hot Saturn."
The Extremes of Smertrios
Due to its proximity to its star, Smertrios is tidally locked. This results in a permanent dayside with temperatures soaring to a staggering 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit (1,420 degrees Celsius) and a relatively cooler nightside that always faces the cold expanse of space. The planet's extreme conditions and unusual composition have puzzled scientists since its discovery in 2005.
The Metal-Rich Enigma
Smertrios stands out not just for its heat but for its density and composition. As Sayyed Ali Rafi, an astronomy researcher at the University of Tokyo, explains, "This planet is of particular interest because it is one of the most metal-rich and densest gas giants that we know of so far." Metals, in astronomical terms, refer to elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations in 2023 revealed that Smertrios has an unusually high metallicity compared to other hot Saturns and even larger hot Jupiters.
Typically, in gas giants, metals are inversely proportional to mass. In simpler terms, the larger the gas giant, the fewer metals it should contain. Smertrios defies this trend with its anomalously large solid core contributing to its high density.
The Significance of Water Discovery
The discovery of water in Smertrios' atmosphere adds another layer to its enigma. "The composition of the planet seems not to be compatible with current formation scenarios that we have for hot gas giants, and it is still a mystery to this day," said Ali Rafi. Observing the planet’s atmosphere could help scientists understand its formation history through its metallicity and carbon to oxygen ratio.
The presence of water, combined with its unique metallic composition, suggests that Smertrios might have undergone an unconventional formation process. This discovery could pave the way for new theories about the formation and evolution of exoplanets, especially those as extreme as Smertrios.
