Unveiling the Mysteries of Radioactive Promethium: An 80-Year Quest

For nearly eight decades, the elusive element promethium has intrigued scientists with its rare and radioactive nature. Discovered in 1945 by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), this rare earth element has remained one of the least understood members of the lanthanide series. Recent breakthroughs, however, have finally shed light on promethium’s crucial properties, opening doors to potential new applications and enhancing our understanding of this mysterious substance.


The Lanthanides: A Brief Overview


Promethium belongs to the lanthanides, a group of 15 metallic elements at the bottom of the periodic table. Known as rare earths, these metals are indispensable in modern technology due to their unique magnetic and optical properties. They are integral components of lasers, smartphone screens, powerful magnets in wind turbines, and electric vehicles.


The Enigmatic Promethium


Unlike its lanthanide siblings, promethium has remained largely obscure due to its radioactive nature and scarcity. Promethium lacks stable isotopes; all its forms are radioactive and decay over time. This inherent instability, combined with its rare occurrence, has made it a challenging element to study. Promethium-147, the isotope produced at ORNL with a half-life of 2.6 years, is particularly valuable yet difficult to isolate in a pure form.


The Breakthrough


In a groundbreaking study published in Nature, ORNL scientists, including Ilja Popovs and Alexander Ivanov, successfully isolated and analyzed promethium-147. Using a method developed last year, the team separated this isotope from nuclear reactor waste streams to create the purest sample possible. The sample was then combined with a specially designed ligand, PyDGA, forming a stable complex in water. This complex enabled the first-ever detailed analysis of promethium’s bonding properties.


Overcoming Challenges


Studying promethium’s properties was no small feat. The element’s radioactive decay into samarium posed a significant challenge, introducing contamination that could obscure results. To circumvent this, the team employed synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. This highly specialized technique, involving high-energy photons from a particle accelerator, allowed researchers to accurately determine the positions of atoms and the lengths of bonds in the promethium complex. By focusing on subtle differences in bond lengths, they successfully isolated the promethium-oxygen bonds from any contaminating samarium.


The Last Puzzle Piece


This analysis marked the first time promethium’s properties could be directly compared with other rare earth elements. Popovs described promethium as “the last puzzle piece” in the study of lanthanides. The PyDGA ligand enabled the formation of stable complexes across the entire lanthanide series, allowing for a comprehensive examination of their fundamental physical and chemical properties.


Future Implications


Understanding promethium’s properties opens the door to potential new applications. Although its current uses are limited to atomic batteries and cancer diagnostics, the newfound knowledge could lead to more widespread applications in technology and medicine. Moreover, this research enriches the scientific community’s understanding of rare earth elements, potentially spurring further discoveries and innovations.
