Tiffany Jackson, a 2007 WNBA draft pick who played nine years in the league and was the No. 5 pick, has died of cancer, according to her university. She was 37 years old.
Jackson, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, passed away on Monday. In April, she was hired as head coach at Wiley College.
"Tiffany was one of the most loving and caring people I've ever met," Wiley College president Tasha Rice-Bennett said in a statement. "Her energy and enthusiasm were contagious. She inspired everyone she met, especially our young women. Tiffany's impact will be felt forever."
Jackson was a three-time All-Big 12 selection and the national freshman of the year in 2004, as voted by the U.S Basketball Writers Association. Out of all Texas players, she is ranked in the top five for career points, rebounds and steals. Jackson is also the only Longhorns player to reach 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 steals and 150 blocks in a career-- quite an accomplishment!
"Tiffany had a fantastic career and was a game-changing player," former Texas coach Jody Conradt said in a statement. "She was recognized for her all-around skill, as well as her ability to play many positions effectively. She was adored by teammates, and we share their sorrow at her loss."
Jackson was drafted by the WNBA's New York Liberty. She also played for the Tulsa Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks. Her best season as a professional came in 2011 with Tulsa when she averaged 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Jackson was able to resume playing in 2017, finishing her final year with the Los Angeles Sparks before retiring at age 32. She was an assistant coach at Texas for two years.
Tiffany was an inspiration to everyone she met. Her fight, her resolve, her strength were unmatched.
"We are shocked and saddened to hear the news of Tiffany Jackson's death," Texas coach Vic Schaefer said. "I'm sure she was looking forward to being the head coach at Wiley College in the upcoming season. She will be greatly missed by so many people."
