The Southern Ring Nebula, known as NGC 3132, is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of Vela, the Sails, approximately 2,000 light-years away from Earth. Often regarded as one of the most glorious and captivating celestial objects in the night sky, the nebula is a cocoon surrounding a dying star. Yet, recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) have revealed fascinating and unexpected features in its structure.
A Misnomer Explained
The term "planetary nebula" can be misleading. These nebulas are not related to planets at all. Instead, they represent the final stages of sun-like stars that, after exhausting their fuel, release their outer layers into space. This process transforms the dying star into a white dwarf, leaving behind a beautiful, glowing shell of gas and dust.
Discovery by James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)
In December 2022, JWST captured stunning images of the Southern Ring Nebula, revealing molecular hydrogen gas forming the nebula's "exoskeleton." This exoskeleton consists of warm gas with a temperature of around 1,000 kelvin (1,340 degrees Fahrenheit, or 726 degrees Celsius). It is heated and illuminated by the ultraviolet light emanating from the white dwarf star at the nebula's core.
The Submillimeter Array (SMA) Observations
To gain further insight into the nebula's molecular composition, a team led by Joel Kastner from the Rochester Institute of Technology used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in Hawaii. The SMA consists of eight radio telescopes on the Mauna Kea volcano. Their primary goal was to measure the carbon monoxide content in the nebula, which serves as a proxy for observing other molecular gases.
By studying the distribution and velocities of the carbon monoxide molecules, the team could identify which parts of the nebula are moving towards or away from us. This information provided critical data for creating a three-dimensional map of the nebula's molecular exoskeleton.
Surprising Findings
The SMA observations led to an exciting discovery. While the nebula's structure was initially thought to be a singular ring, the data revealed something unexpected. The nebula's ring is, in fact, a lobe in a bi-polar nebula seen end-on. Additionally, the researchers discovered a second ring perpendicular to the first, adding another layer of complexity to the nebula's structure.
"When we started to turn the whole nebula around in 3D, we immediately saw it was really a ring, and then we were amazed to see there was another ring," Kastner stated in a press release.
