The ambitious goal to dig towards the center of the earth began as part of a clandestine competition between the USA and the USSR, aimed at conquering the subterranean world. While many are familiar with the space race between these two superpowers, few are aware of their equally intense, albeit less glamorous, race to penetrate the depths of the Earth’s crust.
While the cosmos offers mystery and wonder, the Earth’s crust leads to the mantle—a mysterious layer that constitutes about 40% of Earth's mass. What secrets could this massive layer hold?
Project Mohole: The American Dream
In 1957, the USA took the lead in this underground race with the initiation of Project Mohole. This project aimed to drill through the ocean floor off Guadalupe Island, Mexico, to obtain a sample of the Earth's mantle. Despite achieving a notable depth of 601 feet below the Pacific Ocean bed, Project Mohole faced its demise in 1965 when the US House of Representatives cut its funding, leaving the mantle untouched.
The Kola Project: The Soviet Ambition
The USSR was slower to start but persistent in their ambition. On May 24, 1970, the Soviet team began their drilling project in the Pechengsky District of the Kola Peninsula, Russia. Their goal was simple yet grand: to dig as far as possible into the Earth’s crust. They aimed to surpass the 600 feet achieved by the Americans and set a minimum target of 49,000 feet.
Specialized Equipment for a Herculean Task
To achieve this feat, the Soviet team employed specialized equipment. They initially used the Uralmash-4E drilling rig, commonly used for oil wells but modified for greater depth, reaching 7,000 meters. In 1974, they upgraded to the Uralmash-15000 to enhance their capabilities further.
The Bertha Rogers Hole: America's Deep Dig
In parallel, America made significant progress. In 1974, the Lone Star Producing Company drilled for oil in Washita County, Oklahoma, reaching a depth of 31,400 feet with the Bertha Rogers hole, the deepest manmade hole at the time.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole: A New Record
The Soviet team’s determination paid off on June 6, 1979, when their SG-3 borehole surpassed the depth of the Bertha Rogers hole, reaching 39,000 feet by 1983. Despite its narrow width of 9 inches, this borehole was a significant achievement. However, technical difficulties halted further drilling at this site.
Unexpected Heat and New Discoveries
Undeterred, the Soviet team shifted focus to another borehole, which reached 40,230 feet in 1989. As they drilled deeper, they encountered unexpected heat, which provided crucial data for updating the Earth's temperature map. This new information debunked several geological theories, including the "Conrad discontinuity," which suggested a transition from granite to basalt at certain depths. Instead, they found granite all the way down, altering our understanding of the Earth's crust.
Flowing Water Deep Below
One of the most astonishing discoveries was the presence of flowing water miles beneath the surface. Previously, it was believed that liquid water couldn't exist at such depths. This finding revealed that the Earth's crust has pathways allowing fluid flow, challenging previous notions of its density.
The Legacy of the Kola Superdeep Borehole
Today, the Kola Superdeep Borehole stands as a testament to human curiosity and perseverance. Despite being abandoned and marked as an environmental hazard following the fall of the Soviet Union, it attracts curious visitors. It remains the deepest manmade hole on the planet, reaching depths comparable to stacking Mount Everest atop Mount Fuji.
A Journey Just Begun
While the Kola Superdeep Borehole did not reach the Earth's core—penetrating only about a third of the crust and 0.2% of the distance to the core—it paved the way for future exploration. Other countries, including Germany, Sweden, and Austria, have attempted similar projects, but none have surpassed the Kola's depth.
Humanity's quest to reach the Earth's mantle continues. The secrets of the mantle remain elusive, but the discoveries made along the way highlight the importance of pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration.
