"The thing that really sets the TDE AT2023vto apart from other TDEs is, it is incredibly, incredibly bright," says Yvette Cendes, a researcher at the University of Oregon. "It's 9 billion light-years — and change — away. That's super far away, but it's so bright you can see it even at that distance. Typically, we see TDEs much closer to home."
What Makes AT2023vto So Special?
While this isn't the most distant TDE ever observed, it holds a unique position in the cosmic catalog. Many of the furthest TDEs we've seen feature relativistic jets—beams of material ejected at nearly the speed of light. These jets make such TDEs exceptionally luminous and easier to detect across the vastness of space. However, AT2023vto belongs to the majority category of TDEs that do not exhibit these high-speed jets, at least not yet. Its extraordinary brightness, despite the absence of relativistic jets, makes it the most distant of its kind ever detected.
"This is the furthest of this nonrelativistic category of TDEs seen thus far. That's for sure," Cendes adds. "Studying this is going to be very important for learning what happens when more mass is thrown onto a black hole."
The Gory Details of a Tidal Disruption Event
A TDE occurs when a star ventures too close to a supermassive black hole. The black hole's immense gravitational pull generates powerful tidal forces within the star, simultaneously compressing it horizontally and stretching it vertically. This process, known as "spaghettification," transforms the star into a long, thin strand of plasma, which the black hole then consumes. The term "tidal disruption event" aptly describes the catastrophic stretching and eventual disintegration of the star.
As the star is drawn out into a cosmic noodle, the black hole begins to feast, though it only consumes a small portion of the star's remains. The actual TDE event is fleeting, lasting just a few hours, but its effects reverberate across the universe, offering scientists a fleeting but powerful glimpse into the mechanics of black holes.
"TDEs are interesting because they're basically a unique physical laboratory where you can test things that you can't test on Earth," Cendes explains. "After all, we can't just create black holes here on Earth and throw things on them. Studying the differences between TDEs is always going to be very exciting and interesting."
The discovery of AT2023vto marks a significant milestone in the study of tidal disruption events and black hole physics.
