What makes McMinn County news these days is the school board's vote to ban Maus, a graphic novel that tells Holocaust stories through anthropomorphic mice and cats.
The decision was met with controversy from people all over social media who accused them of censorship for removing scenes containing swear words or nudity in this historically important book about life during World War II.
Greg Locke, the pastor of Mt. Juliet church and conspiracy theorist extraordinaire decided it was time to turn up his signature anti-Semitism by organizing an old fashioned book burning! The books scheduled for destruction included millennial staples like Harry Potter (a series targeted by Christian book burnings back in day) as well as Twilight - hits from 2000s that are currently being read or loved by teens.
Prior to the bonfire, Locke described beefing with "Free Mason devils" and said that he wasn't going down without a fight. He also made note people aren’t mad because they were burning books but rather it was these particular titles - suggesting his critics even other pastors were supporter of witchcraft or devil worshipers in some way.
However last week, the pastor told reporters that he is on a mission from God and his books will be destroyed, "even if it brings about my death."
Tennessee is in the middle of an unfortunate string since last week, thanks to two big news stories. The first one being that book-banning happened outside McMinn County and also involved law enforcement officers shooting at someone on highway!
Thankfully Locke fired up his fiery assault against youth literature which might just keep this godawful streak going into next month.
Detective Nate Keeney said that a caller tipped them off about the books and also provided a very badly written manifesto which included quotes from Stalin, Hitler and other failed tyrants. The sheriff decided not to pursue an investigation because he believes in freedom of speech as much as those people who think you have it even if they don't like what you're saying.
Locke made an announcement through the town's cable channel that he will be burning books for all of October to protest Halloween because it's "disturbing, sickening and disgusting". He ended by warning people not to make any prank calls to his house or they would lose their phone service.
