Jack Sweeney, the Florida teen who tracks Elon Musk's private jet online has set his sights on a new target: Russian oligarchs and billionaires. He is determined to keep track of their every move in order for Americans back home know exactly what they're up against if there ever were any future threats or attacks from these powerful people that could threaten us all.
The young man who rejected Musk's $5,000 offer to delete his Twitter account recently launched two new automated handles — @RUOligarchJets and Putinjet. These profiles have amassed nearly 300k followers combined and provide live updates on the private jets' movements along with pictures that locate them in various parts of Russia.
The teenager's Twitter followers have even given him the nickname "Jet Hunter."
Sweeney said he's been hearing the same thing for years, and those pleas have accelerated since sanctions were levied against Russia's wealthiest.
After President Putin sent troops into Ukraine, Russia's millionaires are facing economic devastation at home and punishment from the West. The United States and its allies have responded by blacklisting key figures linked to the Kremlin.
The Twitter accounts of Russian and Western celebrities, business leaders, sports stars, and even the country's president have been following numerous jets. Roman Abramovich, a Chelsea Football Club owner; Alisher Usmanov, a businessman; and Leonid Mikhelson, the billionaire chairman of Russian gas producer Novatek are just a few of the individuals tracked by these communications.
Sweeney was reportedly taken aback by the size of planes utilized by Russian oligarchs in an interview with Bloomberg.
“The planes owned by these oligarchs are totally insane,” Sweeney added. The wealthiest individuals in the country use commercial-sized aircraft like an Airbus A319 and a Boeing 737. “Compared to other jets, their planes are enormous.”
The documents cover over 40 planes and helicopters linked to Russian oligarchs. He has called for assistance in extending the number of aircraft that can be tracked.
Sweeney is still monitoring Musk's Twitter account, but he said that if Tesla gives him a new Model 3 in exchange for getting rid of the surveillance software then this deal will be sealed.
