Stone Mountain woman celebrated 104th birthday

By: April Carson

On Saturday, a woman in Stone Mountain turned 104 and was greeted with honks, beeps, and clapping from her neighbors.

“I'm good!” she exclaimed to the television station. “Because I was wise, I've lived this long. And because I try to live properly and do the correct things, I believe I've lasted this long. ”

“Who has allowed you to stay this long?” Shaw was asked.

“Jesus Christ!” Shaw exclaimed.

Winnell Cunningham Shaw was overwhelmed with delight as her Antioch Villas Gardens Apartments neighbors gathered to commemorate her birthday.

Her friends and neighbors describe her as a gorgeous Southern lady.

Shaw was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and has seen history from a unique perspective.

When her mother and aunt died, she moved to Atlanta at the age of 12. Shaw went to Ashby Street Elementary School, which is the city's biggest African American public primary school. She subsequently graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, which was both the state's and Atlanta Public Schools' first public high school for blacks.

At the age of 23, Shaw married her soulmate, Frank Shaw. She and her spouse Frank raised four kids until his death.

Shaw was a community seamstress and a childcare provider her entire life, earning the nickname "Ms. Nell." It takes a village to raise a child, and Shaw was devoted to assisting moms in their duties. In 1961, she delivered a friend's baby.

She now has 13 grandchildren, and they've indicated that the times they've been able to sit down and hear stories from "back in the day" have been wonderful.

Shaw stopped working as a seamstress and now enjoys Gin Rummy and drawing. Neighbors claim that she draws almost every day, with her childhood doodles.

Her artwork was on display as the community drove by to celebrate her birthday.
