Sixth Memphis Police officer involved in Tyre Nichols arrest relieved of duty

By: April Carson

Memphis Police Department announced that Officer Preston Hemphill, the sixth police officer at the Tyre Nichols traffic stop investigation has been suspended from duty as of now due to an ongoing probe.

During the confrontation, Hemphill made use of his Taser. The body camera video footage shows Hemphill chasing Nichols down the road before turning back to the scene where their initial traffic stop had taken place.

The Memphis Police Department and the City of Memphis are conducting a full investigation into the incident. As part of that, the department has released new protocols for use-of-force tactics when addressing civilian encounters.

Hemphill's wishes for violence against George Floyd were heard clearly on his body camera video, yet he has not been dismissed or charged. A Memphis police spokesperson declared that Hemphill was delighted when the other officers involved in the case were absolved from service. This is a clear demonstration of the department's double standard when it comes to accountability.

Five African-American officers were charged with second-degree murder after being dismissed following the beating of 29-year-old Nichols at a traffic stop on January 7th. Tragically, three days later, he succumbed to his injuries. The sixth Memphis Police officer involved in the unfortunate incident has now been relieved of duty.

Lee Gerald, attorney for Hemphill, declared that his client was the third police officer at Nichols' traffic pullover and had activated his body camera per departmental regulations. He further commented: "Officer Hemphill never participated in any events at the second scene and is cooperating with relevant authorities regarding this investigation." Friday's release of initial footage from Hemphill's device corroborates this statement.

The Memphis Police Department has continually sought to deliver justice in this case and its actions have been commended by the public. They have taken swift action in removing this officer from duty and further investigations may lead to disciplinary measures if deemed appropriate.

On Friday night, Rodney Wells, Nichols' stepfather, informed ABC News Live that he believes anyone who had a hand in the incident should face criminal charges.

Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, attorneys for the Nichols family, expressed immense disappointment that Memphis police had only relieved Hemphill of his duty instead of firing or charging him. The lawyers questioned why it took so long to announce Hemphill's name to the public and why he was merely suspended rather than discharged immediately.

With confusion and disbelief, the family of Tyre King exclaimed: "How is it possible that his identity and role in our beloved's death are only revealed now? Since day one we have been calling on MPD to be honest with us and the community - yet this new development clearly shows they have failed to do so." This incident leaves us questioning why the implicated white officer was kept hidden from public view and, up until now, has avoided repercussions. We are expecting explicit responses from the Memphis Police Department to satisfy our collective outrage.

On Monday, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy issued a statement indicating that the investigation was still underway and more charges could be announced.

This incident has only further galvanized our efforts to make sure justice is served. We demand accountability and transparency from the Memphis Police Department, and we will not rest until all officers involved in Tyre Nichols' death have been held appropriately accountable for their actions.

The district attorney's office is closely examining all persons linked to the beating of Tyre Nichols, from before and after the event took place. This includes but is not limited to: The officer involved in the initial encounter (who has yet to be formally charged), Memphis Fire Department staff members, and individuals who put together reports following what had occurred.

The community has a right to be informed of any developments in this case as it continues. We understand that justice takes time, but we believe that justice delayed is justice denied. All parties involved must be held accountable for the decisions they have made, and it is our priority to ensure that the right thing is done.

The District Attorney's Office acted with due expedience, yet painstakingly deliberated to apportion charges against those whose misconduct was apparent and contributed to the demise of Mr. Nichols. However, this investigation ought not to be considered complete just yet - a fact that the official emphasized. It is expected that the inquiry will take some time, but due diligence as well as adherence to a strict set of protocols will be implemented to ensure justice is served.
