According to American Airline’s, it needs more money and catering to the rich to increase margins is the way to get it.
American Airlines is now putting some of its nicest jets on existing domestic routes. 17 routes are getting major plane upgrades.
Business travel has not reached pre-pandemic levels, but leisure travel is on the rise. American Airlines, however, is not trying to attract flyers looking for bargain prices. American Airlines are wanting those flying business or leisure to pay more and in exchange, American Airlines is promising a more refined flying experience.
American Airline’s newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is designed to attract flyers with more disposable money and willing to pay extra to fly in luxury and have extra comfort even on domestic trips. And these planes are not as huge like the older planes. These planes are smaller in size and have more modern aspects, like progressive window shades, and pod seating. These planes will have 51 business class pods with doors and 32 Premium Economy reclining seats.
American Airlines have just created an exclusive gated community in the air.
To fly American, you will need money that can pay for exclusivity if you want to experience more comfort in the air.
I recently purchased a flight to go to Ohio. I was only going for a weekend from Friday afternoon to Sunday to see a my last surviving great great aunt. The ticket was so high I almost told my family I could not make it because I just couldn’t justify paying almost a thousand dollars for a weekend trip. I usually like to fly economy premium seating and I always check a large luggage, but that price tag for such a short trip was unreasonable to me. So to save on the trip, I unchecked my premium seating and chose not to check a bag. I decided to turn my Ohio trip into a backpacking occasion.
Airfares generally have recently risen around 20% just for the old uncomfortable seating, so adding these extra luxuries for regular domestic flights will simply add justification for more price increases.
Is this a signal that the line between the haves and have nots are growing so drastically that eventually the poor and middle class will not be able to afford to fly? The middle class and the poor will not only be priced out of the housing market with increased interest rates along with increased home prices, but now the middle class and poor can’t even afford to fly.
Possible scenario: you just paid 20-40% percent more for a flight to Florida from Houston for regular seats. You and your husband are taking your two children to Disney Land. You not only have to wait to board the plane, but when you and your children are finally on the plane, you all have to pass through the gated community of flyers who have doors and privacy in their seating area. Your youngest daughter who is 6 asks, “mommy who’s behind the door.” Your son who is a little older asks, “mommy, do we have pods like that for our seats too?”
“No son; no daughter; those seats are not for us. Keep walking!”
As more opportunities for us to make more money or digital energy of value increases, the day may come where more of us may be able to fly in the gated community too, but for now I guess we just have to hope one day.
