Senator Ernst Announces Audit of the IRS

By: April Carson

While Democrats are pushing to audit America, Republican Senator Ernst is taking action by auditing the IRS – an organization with a habit of hiring tax cheats. It’s time for the IRS to be put under the microscope, and Senator Ernst is leading the charge.

In a speech on the Senate floor this afternoon, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) announced that the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) has agreed to audit the IRS at her request to see if IRS employees have paid their own taxes.

"I am pleased to announce that the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has agreed to audit the IRS at my request," said Senator Ernst. "This is an important step towards holding the IRS accountable and making sure that its employees are following the same rules that they enforce on American taxpayers."

The TIGTA is an independent agency that provides oversight of the IRS. The audit will examine whether IRS employees have complied with their tax obligations, as well as the procedures the IRS has in place to ensure employee compliance.

"The American people deserve to know that the IRS is being run efficiently and effectively, and this audit will help ensure that," said Senator Ernst. "I appreciate TIGTA's cooperation in conducting this important review."

The audit is expected to be completed in the next few months. Senator Ernst will release the findings once they are available.

In May, Senator Ernst wrote to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen requesting an audit of the IRS in light of recent reports of improper behavior by some employees. The IRS has come under fire in recent years for a number of scandals, including targeting conservative groups for extra scrutiny and losing track of billions of dollars in improper payments.

"The IRS must be held accountable for its actions, and an audit is the best way to ensure that taxpayers are treated fairly," said Senator Ernst. "I look forward to seeing the results of this audit and working with my colleagues to fix the problems at the IRS."

Audits like this one are important to help ensure that the IRS is using its resources properly and following the law. Senator Ernst will continue to hold the agency accountable and work to make sure it is providing the best possible service to taxpayers. The IRS has come under fire in recent years due to a number of scandals, including singling out conservative groups for extra scrutiny and losing track of billions of dollars in improper payments. This audit is a step in the right direction to help get the agency back on track.

The IRS has yet to respond to Senator Ernst's request for an audit.
