By: April Carson

Egyptian archaeologists have recently unveiled exciting new findings at the Saqqara necropolis, located to the south of Cairo. Excavations at the ancient burial site have been ongoing since late 2020, and have yielded an abundance of artifacts from various eras.

Among the recent findings are two workshops dedicated to the embalming of humans and animals, along with the tombs of two priests. These remarkable discoveries shed light on ancient practices and offer valuable insights into the past.

In addition, several everyday items such as pottery vessels, tools, jewelry, and textiles were also uncovered. These artifacts provide further evidence of the lives and activities of people living in the area during the period.

"We discovered two significant workshops at Saqqara," explained Dr. Zahi Hawass, the lead archaeologist overseeing the excavations. "One was dedicated to mummifying animals and also used for humans, while the other was exclusively for human mummification. Inside, we uncovered beds, tools, and materials essential to the mummification process."

The ongoing exploration of the necropolis by archaeologists holds the promise of uncovering additional captivating artifacts. This remarkable discovery has already shed light on the intricacies of this ancient culture, and further research is poised to reveal even more profound insights into our past.

The discoveries at Saqqara have also renewed interest in exploring Egypt's other burial sites. Archaeologists are eager to uncover the secrets of these mysterious places and gain a better understanding of ancient customs and beliefs. As such, further excavations may provide even more remarkable artifacts from various periods throughout history.

Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, revealed an exciting discovery during the excavation. A tomb, dating back 4,500 years to the fifth dynasty of the old kingdom, was unearthed. This tomb belonged to Ne Hesut Ba, a revered priest from that era. "His family must have been influential in their time for him to be buried at such a sacred site," he said.

In recent times, Egypt has revealed a series of significant archaeological findings, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.

The discoveries have played a crucial role in Egypt's efforts to rejuvenate its crucial tourism sector. They have sparked curiosity among visitors, prompting them to explore and uncover the secrets of Egypt's ancient civilizations.

"This marks the first instance of unearthing embalming workshops associated with the temples in Saqqara," explained Mohamed Youssef, the director of the Saqqara archaeological site. "Previously, all embalming workshops were solely connected to Apis, the ancient Egyptian God of fertility and death, in Memphis, which is now part of the Giza governorate. This discovery holds immense significance, as it signifies the presence of embalming workshops here in Saqqara."

Scientists have long been fascinated by the mysteries of ancient Egypt, and the recent discoveries at Saqqara are certain to open up a wealth of new avenues for exploration. With further excavations planned in the future, a plethora of exciting finds likely await us.

These fascinating discoveries reaffirm Egypt's place as one of the world's most important historical and archaeological destinations. As such, it is clear that the country's heritage continues to capture the imagination of people around the globe.

"These recent findings are a testament to the dedication of the archaeologists working in Egypt and further demonstrate our commitment to safeguarding, preserving, and promoting our cultural heritage," said Waziri.

The ancient wonders of Saqqara have already attracted a lot of attention worldwide and are certain to draw even more visitors shortly. With a wealth of historical significance contained within its walls, this remarkable site continues to be a source of tremendous pride for the people of Egypt.

Egypt has set its sights on attracting a staggering 30 million tourists annually by 2028, a significant increase from the pre-pandemic figure of 13 million. With determination and strategic planning, Egypt is determined to revitalize its tourism industry and reclaim its position as a top destination for travelers from around the globe.

The country has also committed to upgrading its archaeological sites and boosting its profile with visitors. Egypt's efforts to revitalize its tourism sector, in combination with the recent discoveries at Saqqara, are sure to create an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

At the foot of the pyramids in Giza stands the much-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum, the crowning achievement of the government's strategic plan. After significant delays, this magnificent institution is finally set to be inaugurated, captivating visitors with its rich history and cultural treasures. The museum's grand opening is expected to bring even more tourists to the area and play an important role in restoring Egypt's tourism industry.
