Many people would want to have the ability to see through things, which is what many call "ESP." There may be a camera that could provide this ability.
A team of scientists from the UK and US announced that they have taken an important step in their objective to invent a camera that can see through most objects.
The new high-resolution camera, developed by Northwestern Engineering researchers, can see around corners and through human skin and even bones. It also has the ability to capture fast-moving objects such as speeding cars or even a heart beat.
It can regroup scattered light from single or multiple defocused objects to create a clear image. This may be used to see around corners, seeing the same object from different directions, and imaging an object through fog or ice. In biological applications it could allow for doctors to look inside of you without having to cut you open; in astronomy it could allow us to peer through dust clouds and see objects that would otherwise be invisible.
Non-line-of-sight (NLoS) imaging, which is relatively new and includes a resolution high enough to capture even the tiniest capillaries in action, is one of them.
"Our technology will usher in a new era of imaging capabilities," says Florian Willomitzer, first author of the study from the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University.
“Our current sensor prototypes employ visible or infrared light, but the concept is broad and could be applied to other wavelengths. For example, using the same approach in radio waves for space exploration or underwater acoustic imaging might be possible. It has a lot of potential applications.”
It's been around for millennia and is embedded in everything from bricks to clothes, but it has only recently emerged as a viable candidate for super-fast data transmission. The technology, which utilizes light particles known as photons, might be used in applications ranging from noninvasive medical imaging to early-warning navigation systems for automobiles. But, how does it operate?
It's a high-tech device that, when applied to something in space, transforms the scattered light emanating from it into knowledge about its trajectory to reveal the true thing. They liken it to shining a flashlight through your hand.
In this situation, you should see the bone in your hand, but the light scattering through it causes just a big dot. NLoS can recover scattered light and re-create a coherent image.
This method may be used to achieve a variety of different objectives, such as seeing around a corner or envisioning an organ inside the human body through all of the tissue and bones, for a strong versatile camera. It would even be possible to see inside wooden crates or cardboard boxes and find drugs or other contraband.
The great thing about NLoS is the fact that it's non-line of sight, which means that you can use it from a distance, imaging objects behind windows without breaking them or imaging people behind barriers such as trees or cars. The word "imagining" is actually an understatement when it comes to describe what this device can do.
