Scientists crack the mystery surrounding an ancient galaxy discovered by the Webb telescope

This is puzzling."


Driven by curiosity, the team embarked on a journey of discovery, employing numerical simulations to unlock the secrets hidden within JWST-ER1g. Demao Kong, a graduate student at UCR, proposed a tantalizing explanation. The collapse and condensation of ordinary matter into the dark matter halo of JWST-ER1g could be compressing the halo, leading to a higher density of dark matter—a revelation that challenges conventional understanding.


Daneng Yang, a co-author on the paper, emphasized the significance of JWST-ER1g in unraveling the mysteries of dark matter. "This strong lensing object is unique because it has a perfect Einstein ring, from which we can obtain valuable information about the total mass within the ring," Yang remarked. "A critical step for testing dark matter properties."


At the heart of this scientific odyssey lies the James Webb Space Telescope, a marvel of human ingenuity launched on Christmas Day in 2021.
