America (and others in this world) are mostly split into two camps. Those who think we are in urgent climate crisis and those who think we are not.

Well for those who believe the climate crisis is dire are seeking help from aliens in space.

Using a radio signal that is specifically designed to highlight Earth’s climate will be beamed to the attention of any alien life out there using TRAPPIST-1 planetary system in October.

What’s the message?

Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) International, which is a group of sociologists, historians, scientists, anthropologists, and artists have combined their skills in a common belief that humanity would benefit from beaming messages to the stars rather than waiting for one day alien life to contact us.

The climate-change message will be beamed from the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station in Cornwall, U.K. on October 4 to coincide with the start of World Space Week. World Space Week’s theme this year is Space and Sustainability.

Douglas Vakoch, President of METI International said “any aliens receiving our message won’t be surprised to hear about our climate crisis.”

Now even if alien life hears our message, the biggest challenge will be whether they can understand our language. What if the message is interpreted incorrectly?

Vakoch said, “the greatest challenge of interstellar communication is to establish a common ground of understanding.” The best common ground starting point for the climate crisis message will be the “periodic table of elements.” Because we believe the chemical elements are universal, any alien life with scientific knowledge would recognize the periodic table. And this could create common ground for the messages about the climate crisis on Earth.

Is the chemical elements universal or just universal to us humans?

Currently, the TRAPPIST-1 system is 39 light-years away, so if any alien life gets the message, we would not get a response for about 78 years.

Since this universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old some say, its an increased likelihood that the aliens are more technologically advanced than us humans.

Is there wisdom in age?

Well the team of METI International messengers are hoping this age gap will offer hope for humans facing climate crisis. If there are aliens that have lived since the universe began billions of years ago, then maybe they know how to solve any climate issues they had to face over billions of years and can give us instruction on how to face ours. Maybe they used to live on Earth once before and they left for another planet just like some of us are trying to explore other planets like Mars for habitation. Maybe this is part of the human-to-alien-universe cycle.

Vakoch further added, “by giving aliens insight into the minds of a species that is uncertain about its future, but that is still ready to reach out, we may be offering unique insights to a civilization that has long since left behind such instability and uncertainty. Our candid self-reflection may just be intriguing enough to prompt a response.”

The message will have an environmental theme that includes both music and scientific information. METI International has also teamed up with Stihia music festival in Uzbekistan. Stihia is a nonprofit project that raises awareness of the drying up of Aral Sea that locals rely upon for fishing.

The music that might be included in the message include tracks like “Beauty of the Earth” by Eduard Artemyev, and “Through the Asteroid Belt” by The Comet is Coming.

This year’s message is not METI International’s first message, the first message was the Sonar Calling message in 2018.

Now it would not be human if we didn’t have an opposing group. As I stated earlier METI stands for Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence. But there is another group out there called SETI. You got it. SETI stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Some of these SETI experts are opposed to sending messages to extraterrestrial life. These opposers believe that such communication equate to “unauthorized diplomacy” that could be dangerous for humans because we don’t know what or who is out there. That is a fair concern.

We will just have to wait and see if a reply comes and if one does come, hopefully the SETI experts’ fears are unrealized and the METI’s hopes are fulfilled . Hopefully, we get some answers to the climate crisis, if there really is a crisis, from those that have survived this world the longest-the aliens that have come before us.
