Rising Scams Target Older Americans: FBI Reports $3.4 Billion in Losses

By: April Carson

In a sobering revelation, a recent FBI report highlights the growing threat of scams targeting older Americans, resulting in a loss of more than $3.4 billion last year. This alarming increase represents an 11% rise from the previous year, signaling the need for heightened awareness and proactive measures to protect the elderly from these increasingly sophisticated criminal tactics.

Growing Concern: Vulnerable Older Adults Targeted

The impact of scams on older Americans is devastating, with many lacking the ability to recover their losses. Deputy Assistant Director James Barnacle of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division expressed his concern, noting that “people lose all their money. Some people become destitute."

The FBI received over 100,000 complaints from victims aged 60 and over, with nearly 6,000 individuals losing over $100,000 each. The surge in scams has been noticeable since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people stayed home and became easier targets for fraudsters.

Rising Scams and New Tactics

Investigators have observed a variety of schemes aimed at older Americans, including romance scams, investment frauds, and tech support scams. In the latter, criminals pose as customer service representatives and persuade victims that their bank accounts have been hacked. The victims are then instructed to transfer funds to a new account controlled by the scammers.

Another alarming trend involves scammers using live couriers to collect cash or gold from victims. After convincing victims their accounts have been compromised, fraudsters instruct them to liquidate their assets. They then arrange for couriers to pick up the funds in person.

Tragic Consequences

The dangerous impact of these scams was evident earlier this month when an 81-year-old Ohio man fatally shot an Uber driver he mistakenly believed was attempting to rob him. The incident stemmed from scam phone calls from someone posing as a local court officer demanding money. The Uber driver had been sent to retrieve a package from the man’s home, possibly at the direction of the scam caller or an accomplice.

Protecting Older Americans

The staggering losses reported by older Americans may still be undercounted, as only about half of the more than 880,000 complaints to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center last year included age-related data. These figures emphasize the need for better safeguards and education to prevent scams targeting the elderly.

Families, caregivers, and communities must work together to protect older adults from these deceptive practices. Raising awareness of common scam tactics and encouraging vigilance can help prevent further exploitation. Additionally, reporting any suspected fraud to authorities can aid in tracking down and stopping these criminal enterprises.

In these challenging times, it is vital to remain vigilant and prioritize the safety and well-being of our elderly population. Let us join forces to combat these scams and protect those most vulnerable in our society.
