Of Course We’re Living in a Simulation: An Exploration of the Simulation Hypothesis

By: April Carson

Since philosopher Nick Bostrom proposed in Philosophical Quarterly that the universe and all its contents might be a simulation, the idea has sparked intense public speculation and debate. This thought-provoking hypothesis has prompted many to question the very fabric of reality, leading to diverse perspectives and interpretations on the true nature of our existence. The concept has also attracted the interest of scientists, philosophers, and the general public, igniting discussions on how we perceive and understand the world around us.

Skeptical Perspectives

Physicist Frank Wilczek has contended that the complexity of our universe is too extravagant for it to be a simulation. Creating such complexity demands substantial energy and time. He questions why a conscious, intelligent creator of realities would expend so many resources to make our world more intricate than necessary. While it's a theoretical inquiry, it poses a significant challenge to the simulation hypothesis.

Others, such as physicist and science communicator Sabine Hossenfelder, have argued that the question is not scientific anyway. Since the simulation hypothesis does not arrive at a falsifiable prediction, we can’t really test or disprove it, and hence it’s not worth seriously investigating.

A Need for Empirical Assessment

However, all these discussions and studies of the simulation hypothesis may have missed a key element of scientific inquiry: plain old empirical assessment and data collection. To understand if we live in a simulation, we need to start by looking at the fact that we already have computers running all kinds of simulations for lower-level “intelligences” or algorithms.

For easy visualization, we can imagine these intelligences as non-person characters in video games. In essence, any algorithm operating on any computing machine would qualify for our thought experiment. We don’t need the intelligence to be conscious, and we don’t need it to even be very complex, because the evidence we are looking for is “experienced” by all computer programs, simple or complex, running on all machines, slow or fast.

The Artifact of Computing Hardware

Every piece of computing hardware leaves a distinct trace of its existence within the simulated environment it operates. This trace is represented by the processor speed. If we imagine ourselves as a software program running on a computer, the sole and unavoidable evidence of the hardware supporting us in our simulated world would be the processor speed.

Any other rules we experience would stem from the simulation or the software in which we exist. For instance, if we were characters in a game like The Sims or Grand Theft Auto, our existence would be governed by the rules of the game. Regardless of the game's laws, our actions would always be subject to the influence of the processor speed, which can affect the fluidity of movement, interactions, and even the passage of time within the game.

This interplay between the simulated world and the physical constraints of the underlying hardware creates a unique reality for us as programs. As such, it provides a potential pathway for identifying the existence of a simulation by observing any unusual limitations or variations in speed and performance within our perceived environment. This perspective opens up new avenues for exploring the intersection of our reality with the possible constraints of the hardware that may underpin it.

Impact of Processor Speed

In computing systems, the intervention of the processing speed into the world of the algorithm being executed happens even at the most fundamental level. Even at the most basic level of simple operations such as addition or subtraction, the processing speed dictates a physical reality onto the operation that is detached from the simulated reality of the operation itself.

The question of whether we live in a simulation remains a deeply intriguing one, rooted in both philosophical inquiry and scientific investigation. While skeptics point to the lack of falsifiability and the overwhelming complexity of our universe as reasons to dismiss the hypothesis, others continue to explore the possibilities.

Ultimately, the exploration of the simulation hypothesis challenges us to think deeply about the nature of reality, the limits of scientific inquiry, and the potential for higher-level simulations in our world. Whether or not we are living in a simulation, the pursuit of knowledge in this area provides us with new perspectives on our existence and the universe around us.
