The Awakening
An impressive new humanoid robot created by a UK-based robotics firm called Engineered Arts has demonstrated some disturbingly realistic face movements.
The grey-faced robot's eyes pop open, it contorts its features into a scowl of shock, and it examines its hands in confusion as the first teaser video begins.
The machine's apparent self-awareness is shattered by its sly "I got you" smirk, which seems to suggest that it was attempting to deceive us into thinking it was genuinely self-aware.
We're not sure what to make of this.
It's a clever ruse — the sequence was undoubtedly pre-planned — but it's still a fascinating example of how far robotics have advanced.
Engineered Arts is a UK-based robotics firm that creates custom robots for scientific research and entertainment. It has created model robots of humans before, though this robot is the first to boast such realistic facial movements.
Human-Robot Interaction
According to the company's website, Engineering Arts sees the Ameca platform as a "platform for future robotics technologies" that can be used to develop into new capabilities.
The goal of the robot is to make human-robot interaction studying a lot simpler, and believable facial expressions make it a whole lot easier.
The robot is now available for purchase and event rental, but no price has been announced.
Another important note: while Ameca is amazing at expressing emotions through facial expressions, it is unable to walk yet.
However, Ameca is a modular robot that we intend to enhance over time. One day, Ameca will be able to walk.
