Meet the Two-Year-Old Math Genius Who learnt Japanese by Himself

By: April Carson

Isaiah Gyamfi, a 2-year-old boy from Ghana, is gaining worldwide attention as a child prodigy who can count in at least four languages and solve complex arithmetic problems.

Isaiah, the son of Ghanaian parents who migrated to Japan, told The Huffington Post that he can count in Japanese, Twi (his native language), English and French.

"I like numbers and languages," Isaiah said. "I am learning Japanese now."

Isaiah was five months old when his mother, Jazelle, noticed that he was developing a fantastic intellect. She said she saw him having fun learning one day while watching a video on her phone on YouTube, and decided to watch a video about Japanese numbers afterwards.

Jazelle explained that Isaiah had to listen to the video many times until he was able to repeat the digits back-to-back. In under 24 hours, he learnt how to count up to 40 in Japanese on his own.

Jazelle, who works as an early childhood education instructor in London and is also Isaiah's mother, began developing a learning atmosphere for him when he was only 4 months old. She placed numeracy and literacy flashcards in their living room so that Isaiah could learn via pictures.

Isaiah was a fantastic student who always amazed his parents when he correctly pointed out the correct letters and, eventually, sound them out using phonics. He also practiced writing numbers and performing Math operations without aid.

"I want to help him develop a love of learning at home, which will make him eager for education outside the home," explained Jazelle.

Jazelle also observed that her son liked learning different languages, so she showed him a video in Spanish and gave him Spanish flashcards. He now speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, Twi, Yoruba, and Japanese among other things.

Jazelle started a Instagram account for Isaiah to store and share videos of his learning achievements. The images in the videos show that many people are astonished at how much Isaiah likes learning, as evidenced by his reactions.

In an interview, Jazelle said: "Isaiah is actually really funny and he makes learning fun! He always interacts with us and involves us in his own games; we talk to him like we would to anyone else."

Jazelle also mentioned her plans of letting Isaiah continue to learn by himself via the Internet. She will help him with any problems he might have.
