A groundbreaking discovery by an Italian-led team of scientists has confirmed the existence of a sizable cave on the moon, not far from where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their historic landing 55 years ago. This significant find, located in the Sea of Tranquility, is just 250 miles from the Apollo 11 landing site. Researchers believe this cave, along with potentially hundreds of others, could serve as shelters for future astronauts as various nations aim to establish a permanent human presence on the lunar surface.
The Cave at the Sea of Tranquility
The newly discovered cave, situated at the Mare Tranquillitatis pit (MTP), is believed to have formed from the collapse of a lava tube. The researchers analyzed radar images captured by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2010, comparing these findings with known lava tubes on Earth. The pit itself is an elliptical skylight with vertical or overhanging walls and a sloping floor, hinting at an extensive underground network.
"We find that a portion of the radar reflections originating from the MTP can be attributed to a subsurface cave conduit tens of metres long, suggesting that the MTP leads to an accessible cave conduit beneath the Moon’s surface," reads an abstract from the study. This promising site offers potential shelter from the moon's harsh surface conditions and could support long-term human exploration.
The Significance of Lunar Caves
The radar data reveals only the initial part of this underground cavity, estimated to be at least 130 feet wide and extending tens of yards, likely more. The MTP, the deepest known pit on the moon at about 330 feet deep, offers access to this remarkable find.
"Lunar caves have remained a mystery for over 50 years. So it was exciting to be able to finally prove the existence of one," Leonardo Carrer and Lorenzo Bruzzone of the University of Trento shared in an email to the Associated Press. Most of these pits are located in the moon’s ancient lava plains, with potential additional caves at the moon’s South Pole, a target for NASA’s upcoming astronaut landings. The permanently shadowed craters at the South Pole are believed to contain frozen water, crucial for drinking water and rocket fuel.
Implications for Future Lunar Missions
During NASA’s Apollo program, 12 astronauts landed on the moon, starting with Armstrong and Aldrin on July 20, 1969. The findings suggest there could be hundreds of pits and thousands of lava tubes on the moon, providing natural shelters for astronauts. These caves would offer protection from cosmic rays, solar radiation, and micrometeorite strikes, which are significant challenges for building habitats from scratch.
Mahesh Anand, a professor of planetary science and exploration at the UK-based The Open University, highlighted the advantages of a lunar habitat inside a cave. "For example, there would be less fluctuation in ambient temperature between lunar day and night and more protection from space radiation and micrometeorite impacts," he told The National News. However, he also noted that accessing a 330-foot deep chute would require innovative engineering solutions to establish a sustainable habitat.
Looking Ahead
This discovery marks a significant step towards long-term human exploration and habitation on the moon. As scientists continue to explore and understand these lunar caves, the dream of a permanent human presence on the moon becomes increasingly feasible. With further advancements in technology and engineering, these natural shelters could one day serve as the foundation for lunar bases, enabling humanity to explore and utilize the moon like never before.
