Lithuania paid $113,000 to a Guantánamo Bay detainee who allowed the CIA to torture him

By: April Carson

Lithuania has compensated a man who was tortured by the CIA in a black site on Lithuanian soil before he was transferred to Guantánamo Bay with more than $100,000.

In 2018, the European Court of Human Rights found that Lithuania had violated the European Convention on Human Rights by allowing the CIA to torture Abu Zubaydah there.

The newspaper added that Zubaydah is suing the Lithuanian government for $700,000 in compensation. The Lithuanian government has now paid him $113,000 as reparations. However, because he is still detained, Zubaydah cannot access the funds and his assets have been frozen by the US Treasury.

He was detained by the US in 2002, believing him to be an al-Qaeda member. He was held in several CIA black sites across the world — where he has described severe torture — before being transferred to Guantánamo Bay in 2006.

Zubaydah has never been charged with any offenses, and after thorough investigations, it was revealed that he was not a member of al-Qaeda or aware of the 9/11 attacks in advance.

Despite the fact that he is still imprisoned indefinitely.

In addition, Zubaydah has drawn pictures of the methods he was tortured, as Eliza Relman of Insider Magazine previously reported.

He's shown being waterboarded, confined in boxes for days on end, kept from sleeping, and having his head bashed against the wall. He also lost an eye while detained, but no one knows why.

It is unclear how much of this kind of torture, if any, existed in Lithuania.

According to the Guardian, European judges were previously told that while Zubaydah was unlikely to have been subjected to the most inventive forms of torture while he was in Lithuania, compared to the other sites where he was detained, he nevertheless endured what amounted to torture there.
