Japan warns citizens to seek cover as North Korea fires a missile over the country

By: April Carson

On Tuesday, according to reports from its neighbors, North Korea launched a ballistic missile over Japan. The missiles were tested amid stalled nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea.

At least one missile fired from North Korea flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, according to the Japanese prime minister’s office.

Authorities have issued an evacuation order for residents in northeastern regions due to an impending danger. This is the first time such measure has been taken in five years, according to reports. “A North Korean missile has been detected. Please take shelter in a building or underground,” the alert read.

South Korea's military says it has fired "warning shots" after detecting North Korean soldiers crossing the countries' shared border.

Before resuming operations, trains were closed in Japan's Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures after a government notice that the North Korean missile appeared to have fallen into the Pacific.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said they had detected the deployment of a ballistic missile into North Korea's eastern seas. It didn't provide further information, such as how far the weapon traveled.

The U.S. also confirmed the launch and said it was assessing the situation.

The launches come amid heightened tensions on the peninsula, with Pyongyang accusing Washington and Seoul of escalating hostility by conducting military drills.

North Korea has conducted five rounds of weapons tests in the past 10 days, which is seen as a response to military drills between South Korea and the United States. North Korea views such drills as an invasion rehearsal.

Tensions have also been rising over the past few months as the U.S. has been pushing for more stringent international sanctions against North Korea in an effort to get the country to give up its nuclear weapons program.

The North’s state media earlier on Sunday said leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the “very important test” at an undisclosed location. The report didn’t say what was tested, but it come amid growing outside worries that Pyongyang soon could conduct its first flight test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the U.S. mainland.

The missiles launched during the prior four rounds of launches were short-range and landed in the sea between Korea and Japan. These missiles are capable of striking targets throughout South Korea.

Some experts believe the North is also testing a new intermediate-range missile, which if perfected could be deployed to target U.S. military bases in the Pacific. The North has threatened to do that if the United States doesn’t end its annual springtime war games with South Korea, which Pyongyang views as an invasion rehearsal.

The U.S. has said it has no intention of doing that as long as the North continues its nuclear and missile programs.
