Instagram has now added a new function to help combat the problem of white creatives receiving more visual exposure than Black creators, as TikTok continues to face accusations of racism. The new feature, called “Creator Credits,” will list the names of the account holders who originally created a video or photograph, regardless of their race or ethnicity.
Instagram announced a new special tag on Monday to give professional accounts and influencers credit for their original work. The feature was created in response to the Black creators who feel neglected or excluded from trends that they generate, according to NBC News.
Following the success of Black users' dance challenges on TikTok, several Black content providers boycotted creating dance challenges after learning that white creators were obtaining greater praise from trends developed by Black users.
"This new feature is designed to give credit where it's due," said an Instagram spokesperson in a statement to NBC News. "When people search for a specific hashtag, they can see who originally posted it and view other recent posts with the same hashtag."
“WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT AS BLACK CREATORS' CONTENT IS BEING DISTRIBUTED NOW, THEY ARE RECEIVING THE CORRECT ATTRIBUTION,” INSTAGRAM ENGINEER CAMERYN BOYD SAID. “
In an effort to expand more Black creators and get influencers to move their viral content from TikTok to Instagram, data analyst Alexis Michelle Adjei collaborated with Boyd.
“The creation of this new feature was focused on black creators and the inequality in the creator ecosystem,” Adjei said.
Users must tap "Tag People" when creating a post in order to use the new enhanced tags, according to Tech Crunch. Users may then choose their contributors by selecting "Add Tag." To show the creator category that includes job titles such as "stylist" or "photographer," click "Show Profile Category."
The feature will guarantee that all those who contributed to the material are properly credited.
“Crediting is an entryway to a long-term career as a creator for many Black and underrepresented artists, while combating cultural appropriation and ensuring the world knows who is driving culture in simple terms — if you're a makeup artist, songwriter, or another important collaborator on a post, your contributions will be more evident. We hope this is one small way we can begin to level the playing field and make room for everyone to create,” said Instagram in a blog post.
The new feature is currently being tested with a small group of creators and will be rolled out more broadly in the coming months.
