Officials announced on Thursday that all five individuals aboard the tourist submarine, which had embarked on an expedition to explore the Titanic shipwreck, tragically perished due to a "catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber."
Following the U.S. Coast Guard's extensive search in the North Atlantic, an announcement was made confirming the discovery of a debris field on the sea floor. The recovered fragments have been identified as parts belonging to the missing submarine.
During a briefing, Rear Adm. John Mauger of the Coast Guard stated that the wreckage aligns with a devastating implosion of the vessel. He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected. A spokesperson from OceanGate Expeditions, the company responsible for the expedition, conveyed the unfortunate news that the passengers, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, have tragically perished.
The Titanic Submersible was intended to give the public a once-in-a-lifetime chance to view the wreckage of the doomed luxury liner. It is believed to have been the first dive made by a submersible vehicle, using state-of-the art technology, since its resting place at a depth of over two miles was discovered in 1985.
What happened?
On morning, a team of five aboard the OceanGate Expeditions' submersible, named Titan, began a dive to explore the site of the Titanic wreckage. However, after approximately an hour and 45 minutes, the crew of the research ship Polar Prince lost contact with the submersible, as reported by the Coast Guard.
On Sunday night, the Coast Guard issued an alert to mariners regarding a missing submarine. The report described the submarine as being 21 feet long with a white hull, and it was reported as overdue from its last known position.
The submarine was misplaced in an area approximately 900 miles east of Cape Cod, in the North Atlantic. The water there reaches a depth of about 13,000 feet, which is comparable to the depth of the Titanic wreck. As concerns grew over the limited air supply, a unified command consisting of multiple international agencies intensified their search and rescue efforts accordingly.
The group of individuals on board consisted of an operator, identified as Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, along with four mission specialists. The term "mission specialists" refers to the passengers who secured a seat by paying up to $250,000.
For an extended period, the destiny of the submarine and its occupants remained shrouded in enigma. Yet, after several days of uncertainty, the debris field was identified and announced by the Coast Guard.
Upon the discovery of the debris, a U.S. Navy official revealed that an "acoustic anomaly consistent with an implosion" had been detected shortly after the submarine lost contact with the surface on Sunday. This valuable information was promptly shared with the Coast Guard, enabling them to refine the search area. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin provided these insights, shedding light on the situation.
Experts explained that the immense pressure of the deep sea would have caused the vessel to implode, leading to instantaneous destruction.
"In instant, it vanishes," remarked Will Kohnen, the chairman of the Marine Technology Society Submarine Committee, in an interview with the Reuters news agency.
"It collapses inward within a fraction of a second," explained Kohnen. "In a way, it's a mercy, as it's possibly a more humane end than enduring the incredibly challenging circumstances of spending four days in a cold, dark, and confined space. Thus, this event would have unfolded rapidly, without anyone truly comprehending what had occurred."
Who were the passengers aboard the sub?
CBS News has confirmed the identities of the individuals aboard the submersible. Among them are Hamish Harding, a 59-year-old British billionaire, esteemed business owner, and intrepid explorer. Accompanying him are Shahzada Dawood, a British-Pakistani businessman, and his son Suleman. Also on board is Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French explorer famed for his numerous dives to explore the Titanic. Lastly, we have Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions, who is serving as the pilot.
Shortly before the Coast Guard briefing on Thursday afternoon, OceanGate spokesperson Andrew Von Kerens released a statement expressing heartfelt condolences to the families of the Titan crew. The statement acknowledged the tragic loss, as all five individuals aboard the submersible were presumed to have lost their lives.
The disappearance of the OceanGate Expeditions' submersible, and the unfortunate loss of its passengers, serves as a somber reminder of the perils associated with deep sea exploration. Experts believe that it is unlikely any evidence will remain at such depths due to the intense pressures. Thus, we may never know what truly happened on that fateful day.
"These individuals were genuine explorers, united by an unwavering spirit of adventure and a profound dedication to the exploration and preservation of the world's oceans," stated the company. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to these five remarkable souls and their families during this devastating period. We mourn the loss of their lives and the happiness they brought to all who knew them."
