In Less Than 500 Years, Earth May Become an "Alien World" - 10 Facts You Should Know

By: April Carson

The international team of climatologists, anthropologists and ecologists have stated that if the average temperature doesn't stop rising until year 2500 then Earth may become unfit for human life. In their work they considered three possible scenarios in which habitable regions will be devoid or uncultivable due largely to a lack fresh water sources available to support major population centers with dependence upon irrigation systems centuries before it becomes impossible because there just isn’t enough rainfall around anymore.

The study suggests that nothing short of a miracle (a magical technology) will be able to save humanity from such a fate. However, whether we like it or not, technology is advancing at such a rapid pace that some researchers believe that an efficient machine able to extract water from air can be built using available parts and the proper tools within the next decade.

In fact, Dr. Omar Yaghi from the University of California believes that within a decade we will be able to extract water from air with a machine that extracts ambient humidity and converts it into safe freshwater. In addition, this technology is expected to run without electricity or moving parts except for a fan to draw in fresh air from outside.

Here are 10 Facts you should know about Earth's future from a recent Nature Communications article:

  1. In 2100 - Current global climate models suggest that extreme climate events will become more common as the planet warms. The number of catastrophic events such as floods, droughts and wildfires have been increasing over the last few decades, and by 2100, will likely increase by two orders of magnitude.

  2. What are the Predictions - The majority of traditional climate-change forecasts end around the year 2100 since predicting farther ahead in time is largely useless. There are still 80 years until the end of the century, and despite scientists' expectations for broad changes, it's difficult to forecast what will occur before then.

  3. Earth in 2500 - In their new research, scientists wanted to figure out what our planet may be like 500 years from now. According to the most recent projections, Earth in 2500 might become almost or entirely uninhabitable. Unless the world as a whole changes its habits, Earth could become "alien" to us.

  4. Three potential scenarios for the events up to 2500 were evaluated: low mitigation, global warming, and medium and high, which represents the Paris Agreement's objectives (reducing the average temperature by 2 degrees Celsius).

  5. A new study published in the Journal Nature Climate Change suggests that global climate change is creating extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and floods and that these conditions will probably be exacerbated with further warming . Researchers warn us that massive hurricane activity could cause the oceans to rise even more rapidly. This frightening scenario is further accelerated by melting ice in Antarctica and Greenland, which is leading to an increase in sea levels.

  6. Another study published in the journal Nature Geoscience claims that warming oceans are likely to begin producing new carbon dioxide rather than absorbing it, accelerating climate change even further . The paper's authors say this could cause an explosion in atmospheric carbon dioxide and raise global temperatures by 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) as early as 2050.

  7. Heat Stress - Researchers have also modeled the spread of plants, crops, and heat stress in order to see how they would affect global warming. According to the simulation, temperature will rise even more after 2100 in the worst and moderate scenarios.

  8. Vegetation - Plants and land will move closer to the poles, leading to a collapse of vegetation in regions such as the Amazon Basin.

  9. Paris Agreement - The Paris Agreement was enacted in 2015 and has one major aim: to keep the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees before the start of the 21st century. Unfortunately, despite its success, the most recent climate change study found that none of the world's biggest economies are ready to make necessary adjustments.

  10. Who knows, perhaps humans will live in space by the year 2500 and our species won't perish on its native planet. There is, however, no assurance in this case, and certainly none of us will be around to see if it comes true or not. With that in mind, it is our responsibility to modify our behavior now because if we do not, many of the species on Earth will perish.
