The old saying goes that you can't make something from nothing. But, as it turns out, the physics of our universe is a little more complex than that. In fact, scientists have been trying for years to create matter from thin air. And now, they've finally proven that a theory first shared 70 years ago was correct: we really can make something from nothing. This is a truly revolutionary finding, as it could change the way we think about the universe and our place in it.
The universe is made up of several conservation rules. These regulations cover a variety of topics, including energy, charge, momentum, and so on down the list. Scientists have spent decades attempting to figure out how to generate matter - a goal that is far more difficult than it first appears. We've already done the impossible by making stuff disappear, but making it from nothing is an entirely different story.
So, what changed? How did these researchers create something out of nothing? Well, they found a loophole in the rules of conservation.
Many ideas for how to make something out of nothing exist - especially because quantum physicists have sought to better understand the Big Bang and what may have caused it. When two particles collide in empty space, new particles can sometimes be produced. There are even speculations that a strong enough electromagnetic field might produce matter and antimatter from scratch.
But what about in a laboratory? Can we really create matter out of nothing? It turns out, the answer is yes - at least, according to the rules of conservation.
Even though it has always appeared impossible, scientists never stopped trying to find ways to manage it. And now, their research seems to have finally paid off. As Big Think reports, a group of researchers were able to create electric fields in their laboratory early 2022 that were strong enough level the properties of graphene.
So far, the experiment has only been able to create a single layer of atoms. But the team is hopeful that, with further refinement, they will be able to create bulkier matter - and perhaps even open up a whole new area of physics.
By utilizing these fields, the researchers were able to showcase how pairs of particles and antiparticles can be created from utter nothingness. This effectively proves that Schwinger's theory- matter can be created from nothing- is correct. With this new information, we can develop a deeper understanding of how our universe was born and operates.
While the experiment was groundbreaking, it is important to note that it has only been conducted on a very small scale. In order to create anything more substantial, the team will need to refine their technique. But if they are successful, the implications could be huge.
This could lead to a completely new form of energy that could power our homes and devices, or even propel spaceships. It could also help us to understand the mysteries of dark matter and quantum foam.
The possibilities are endless, and with this new discovery, the sky is literally the limit.
