How to be Successful: 16 Traits That Will Help You Succeed in Life

By: April Carson

What does it truly imply to be successful? The answer is determined by your personality and the particular circumstances of your life.

Of course, there are conventional markers of success: the grand mansion, the premium automobile, the important work, and so forth. These concepts are frequently reinforced in popular culture through films such as The Pursuit of Happiness. These are, however, merely superficial notions of what constitutes a happy existence. The ideal definition of success should be more spiritual in nature rather than materialistic. Success is not defined by the number of accolades you receive; it's all about making a difference in people's lives and living life to the fullest.

Finding your bliss, on the other hand, may not always pay off financially. As a result, most of us want to discover a happy medium between creating a life we genuinely love and earning enough money to maintain it going. Isn't that essentially the definition of living the dream?

Many people aim to be successful. Finding that success, however, might be difficult when you're young, unseasoned, or cash-strapped. Here are some ideas for determining what constitutes success and how to form the proper habits in order to achieve it for yourself.

How do you define success?

Success means various things to different individuals. For some, career progress, a corner office and a comfortable wage are indicators of success. For others, it's about loving their work and being passionate about what they do every day.

Some people, on the other hand, don't even think about work when they define success; it might be personal fulfillment, the strength of their relationships, the ability to give money to a charity they care about, being able to travel the world or simply afford to put groceries on the table without worrying about next month's bills.

To be successful, you must first define what success means to you. How can you become successful without a goal in sight? You can't complete a journey without knowing where you're going. To understand where you want to end up, figure out how to be successful for yourself, whatever that looks like.

To achieve success, you need intrinsic motivation

While those external measures of success may be what come to mind when you think about a successful individual, most people don't become wealthy or receive significant recognition for their accomplishments.

Is motivation enough to help you succeed? There are many forms of motivation, and they're not all created equal. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is one of the most important motivational dualities to consider when it comes to achievement.

Intrinsic motivation is toward the delight of what you are doing. Extrinsic motivation is concerned with obtaining a specific aim, whether or not it comes to pass. This goal might be money, recognition, or even success. It's the difference between writing a book in your spare time because you have a story to tell versus doing it because you want to be on the New York Times bestseller list. While the latter would be wonderful, it shouldn't be your motivation to write a book.

If you concentrate on external motivation, seeking approval from outside sources, you won't have the perseverance to keep going when you hit the inevitable roadblocks along the way to your goals. You're motivated by the journey rather than the potential outcome when you're driven by internal factors such as passion, ambition, fun, and so on. This allows you to continue your journey and ensures that you are more successful in your mission as a result.

Life success: How successful people think

It's possible for you to be a good or bad person regardless of your motivation. Your brain fires off hundreds of ideas and interpretations every second. Your feelings, in turn, impact your thoughts and actions around you. If you're not in the right mental state for success, you'll never be able to get there.

According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, who distilled 20 years of research into her best-selling book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, having a growth mindset is an important predictor of success. She goes on to state that your attitude—your fundamental beliefs about life and yourself—has a significant role in determining your success. Your mindset informs you as to who you are and what you believe. It's your overall attitude.

A growth mindset is defined as a belief that people can improve their capabilities. By developing your potential, you'll not only increase your chances of winning, but also maximize your chances of earning more money.

Being flat is the polar opposite of this; it is being ridge, unoriginal, and giving up in the face of difficulty. Staying closed-minded to any thoughts that don't match your own will most certainly lead to failure.

Successful people not only have growth mindsets, but they are typically upbeat and confident individuals who are looking forward to achieving their objectives. They're realistic about the amount of hard work they'll need to put in in order to be successful, but they do believe that they will achieve amazing things. They don't self-deprecate; instead, they lift themselves up.

In other words, successful individuals have a clear vision of their own success. They may aspire it before they create it. Being adaptable with your imagination and able to picture your success allows you to take advantage of the ability of manifestation.

It's easy to believe that just believing something will make it happen, but there is significance in being able to picture your own success. Having this image in your mind allows you to imagine what prosperity looks like and helps you keep going when the going gets tough.

Habits that make people more successful

The nitty-gritty of how to be successful is coming next, once you've decided on your goals and have your mind in the right place to accomplish them.

To get there, you'll have to develop solid habits that will assist you along the road. These behaviors allow these individuals to stick with their objectives, manage their time well, stay on the right track, and remain mentally and physically fit enough to continue.

Here are some of the most essential habits for achieving success at whatever you want to achieve in life:

Cultivate your grit

There is a certain degree of privilege associated with many forms of success, but you don't have to be a genius to be successful. According on her book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, psychologist Angela Duckworth claims that the most accomplished individuals combine passion and perseverance in a unique way.

You don't need any special abilities to be successful; all you have to do is cultivate your grit. Discover what you're enthusiastic about and keep anything that gets in your way out of your path.

Kick imposter syndrome to the curb

Feeling like a failure before you've even started is one of the most common roadblocks to success. We've all had impostor syndrome at some point; it's a feeling that you aren't good enough for your job, that you don't belong in a group of professionals, or that your own abilities are inadequate.

This is where you'll return to your visualization practice. Visualize your own goals and recall what you're aiming for when you feel down. Reminding yourself of your talents and experience can help you get your mojo back, and while some things take place quickly in life, the only way to get where you want to be is to stay put.

Be prepared to step out of your comfort zone

It's not easy to be successful. You'll have to face difficulties along the way. The form these barriers take will vary from person to person. Some individuals may find it difficult to ask for assistance (or money) from a family member. For others, you'll need to acquire a new ability and might find yourself back in school as the eldest student in the class.

Pushing negative thoughts aside and getting used to discomfort is just one more thing you must do in order to be successful. However, the more you push yourself to get uncomfortable, the more accustomed you'll become.

Create a routine that works for you

Routines may be tedious, but they can also help you be more productive and save you time. You can focus on what's essential by knowing how your daily minutes are spent and then simplifying that process.

Set time aside for yourself to relax and unwind during the day. Establish a schedule so that you may balance your job and personal life. Make plans for meals and workouts to keep yourself balanced. You can get more out of your days if you plan them ahead of time.

Get enough sleep

Yes, if you're starting a firm from the ground up or working on a comparable task, you'll undoubtedly have to work some late nights. But prioritizing your health is simply not an option. It's impossible to be successful without maintaining your edge, and sleep is an important aspect of that. You'll be well on your way to burnout if you don't get enough sleep, which might lead to a lack of drive or the ability to keep going.

Make sure self care is a priority

Most successful individuals understand that they can't fill a cup that is already full. To begin resolving these problems, you'll do your finest job and be your best self if you make taking care of yourself a priority.

This does not imply you need to spend money on massages once a week. Sure, an energetic body is just as important as a healthy mind, but self-care is personal to each individual. What you do to relax is unique to you. However, ensuring that your planned meals are nutritious and filling is an element of self-care.

Another approach to look after yourself is to go outside every day, even for a short walk. Taking time off and actually taking it is a fantastic method to put your well-being first. True happiness is a long-term goal, and you must be attentive as the circumstances change. It's not the same for everyone.

Don’t waste time on nonessentials

Many successful people cut out tasks that aren't important to them in order to devote more time to achieving their objectives.

For example, you may consider eating the same breakfast every day so that you can save time by not making a grocery list or preparing meals. You might downsize your wardrobe into a capsule wardrobe or wear a self-imposed work attire so you do not have to worry about selecting an outfit each day.

For example, you may want to restrict certain programs and websites from your devices so that you don't waste time scrolling social media for hours after a hard day's work. Consider which activities you could eliminate from your daily routine in order to focus on things that are really important to you and improve your life success.

Work on your productivity

When it comes to using social media for business purposes, you may want to consider your productivity and see how you can improve.

If you tend to put off tasks and save everything for the last minute, this system may be beneficial—and that's fantastic. If procrastinating causes you anxiety or triggers your impostor syndrome, consider experimenting with ways to modify these behaviors.

Most of the time, simply beginning a project is enough to get you started. Set a timer for five minutes and tell yourself you can stop when it ends. Most likely, once you sit down to work, you'll want to keep going.

You can also give yourself a reward after accomplishing a goal if that helps you stay productive. You won't have to deceive yourself into getting things done after you establish new behaviors.

Commit to saving money and commit to yourself financially

You might need to save money in order to achieve your objectives. If that's the case, setting up a savings account for your project is an excellent approach to keep you on track.

You can also send your money directly to this account each month, which will help you build your success fund and encourage you to continue with your objectives. Even if you only have $10 a month, it's something. Finally, whether you need to cut back on other enjoyable expenditures for a while in order to fund your aspirations, that's fine. It shows that you're completely dedicated when you make a financial commitment to yourself.

Realize that failure is not only an option, but okay

Every great individual has had to overcome adversity along the way. These individuals did not let a failure deter them from pursuing their interests. If you expect to fail in some manner, you'll be less shocked when it happens.

You will need to continue to pick yourself up when you fall down and work around the obstacle in order to build your grit and make your future success that much sweeter.

Enlist accountability partners

It's rare for someone to achieve success entirely on their own. In your life, look for people who you can lean on to help you celebrate your victories, stay on track with your objectives, and assist you when you're having trouble or want to give up. Whether it's friends, coworkers, or family members, they're individuals you can count on to tell it like it is and motivate you to keep going.

Seek out mentors

Look for specialists who could help you with your problem. Even if you can't meet these people in real life, you may contact them or follow them on social media to participate in live chats. If you're searching for people who've already accomplished what you want to accomplish, it may provide a different perspective on your trip and help you figure out how to get there.

Never stop learning

Don't be too quick to assume yourself an expert. Even the world's greatest minds continue to learn and develop their thinking. Read books, listen to podcasts, attend lectures, and take classes if you can—every little bit helps! Even if your specialty does not necessitate study, having a questioning attitude allows you to be better at solving problems and coming up with new ideas.

Trust your gut

You know yourself better than anybody else. While you should consider the thoughts and opinions of others, ultimately you must be able to trust your own instincts when making important decisions. To be successful, you must have faith in your capacity to make crucial decisions and live with them. To help you improve this skill, try meditation or journaling.

Keep going

Rory Vaden, an expert on leadership, has a saying that is frequently parroted: “Success is never owned. It is leased and must be paid every day.” That's a relief.

It's never the case that you arrive at your destination. It's all about continuing to elevate your game and becoming the best version of yourself possible. You've never really gotten there since you're always working toward self-improvement or your next move.
