The arrival of AGI is edging closer, and with it, the arrival of AI in your field and the end of human occupations.
Buckminister Fuller once said, “We should do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living.”
Mr. Fuller died in 1983.
Microsoft has announced a "multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment in Open AI," which is getting smarter (literally) by the day, despite the fact that the company will be laying off 10,000 people. And the futuristic concept of Terminator's "Rise of the Machine" could be a present-day reality.
As a lawyer, I fully appreciate how AI has the potential to take over many of the tasks currently falling to me in service of my clients. Many high-paid professionals and low-level employees may be at risk due to intelligent robots, automation, and the elimination of the need for vacation and sick leave. Extremely susceptible!
Human white-collar jobs are being automated away by AI. Pengcheng Shi, associate dean of RIT's department of computing and information sciences, stated, "I don't think anyone can stop that."
Learning from AI is the new standard in education, and it won't set you back a hundred grand in loans.
According to the New York Post, Shi added, "this is not crying wolf, because the wolf is at the door."
There are a lot of us whose employment are susceptible to being eliminated, and a lot more who don't realize it. Whether it's the banking industry, the medical field, or the publishing industry. Already, self-publishing has become increasingly common, but now there's also a growing population of authors who don't consider traditional publication necessary.
However, I don't see how AI is much different from the introduction of automobiles, which displaced the use of horses, and dirt roads or the introduction of the automated elevator, which eliminated a once- high status position—the elevator attendant. We, as a species, will eventually develop into a more perfect version of ourselves, and that fills me with confidence. As a result, we can shift our identity from a job-dependent society to one in which people are free to be themselves without fear of retaliation or fear that they or their family will not be able to meet their basic needs. We will figure out how to work with this technology rather than let it rule our lives (at least eventually).
But until then, many of us will worry ourselves to sleepless nights as these computers increase in intelligence and capability at an exponential rate.
But have not fear! Sleep well and let the robots do the jobs. The idea of having to earn a living is being disrupted. Starting Now! So live open to expand past old identities.

You'll find out how to put technology to work for you rather than the other way around.
Keep in mind that some people died believing that riding on trains traveling faster than 30 miles per hour or using automatic elevators would cause the human body to melt, or they died believing that vehicles were the "devil wagons,." Some humans even died believing that women were too prone to fainting, physical weakness, and bouts of hysteria to safely operate vehicles on their own. Beliefs should always be open to changes in the reality in front of you.
Change is always disruptive, especially when it transforms the core of who you think you are or how you think life has to be. To put it simply, change notifies the status quo of the old that it is redundant. The old, however, failed to remember that it, too, was once cutting edge. Do not be hesitant to use the technology that is readily available to you. Use it, please. Let's expand upon that. Let's use it to make our lives more fulfilling.
Buckminister Fuller might just be right!
