Hernando County deputies make latest fentanyl bust, arresting 4 suspects in the process

By: April Carson

After an extensive undercover investigation of narcotics sales in Brooksville, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office has apprehended four suspects.

The agency was made aware of Steven Barlock, a felon with past convictions allegedly distributing fentanyl from his home at 8800 Highpoint Boulevard. What's more, the sheriff's office had already been to this same residence four times for overdose calls in the last twelve months.

After infiltrating the home over several visits for undercover drug purchases, detectives acquired a search warrant. Upon entry, they discovered over 50 grams of fentanyl. In addition, other drugs and drug paraphernalia were found at the scene.

During the search of the home, deputies found 3.3 grams of fentanyl, 1.1 grams of methamphetamine, 1.6 grams of marijuana, digital scales for distribution purposes, glass pipes and packaging bags that all indicated evidence related to narcotics activity. Furthermore Michael Wein, Joseph Connors and India Barlock were also in possession a variety drug paraphernalia items at the scene as well.

Furthermore, the sheriff's office reported that Wein and Connors were in possession of IDs and credit cards belonging to someone else. Wein was also found to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Law enforcement apprehended Steven Barlock and charged him with a lengthy list of offenses, such as possession of fentanyl, selling of fentanyl, intent to sell controlled substances (fentanyl), and illegal utilization of two-way communication devices. The other suspects were also arrested on various charges related to narcotics.

This bust is the latest of a growing number of fentanyl-related arrests in Hernando County, with law enforcement noting an increase in dealers selling opioids across the area.

According to the sheriff's office, Barlock had a previous criminal record of possession of controlled substance, felony theft and causing property damage while fleeing from an accident.

Wein and Connors were also taken into custody for unlawful possession of personal identification information, in addition to the three suspects who had been apprehended on suspicion of owning fentanyl, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Furthermore, evidence indicated that the suspects had been utilizing two-way communication devices to facilitate their illegal activities.

Wein's jail records demonstrate that she is a convicted felon, having been arrested for charges such as possession of illegal substances, fraudulently using credit cards, and misusing personal information.

Connors' criminal record comprises of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, petty thievery, battery and defrauding a pawn broker. On the other hand, India Barlock had no former offenses according to the sheriff's department.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is actively working to combat the issues of drug abuse, trafficking and illegal activity.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis expressed his gratitude for the tenacity of his Vice and Narcotics detectives, praising them for their hard work in all of their investigations. He continued by expressing that he hopes justice is served on these individuals to avoid more drug overdoses or further deaths.

The four suspects have been booked into the Hernando County Detention Center. Charged with possession of fentanyl, Connors faces felony charges and India Barlock has been arrested with a minimum of misdemeanor charges.

This is not the first time that narcotics officers from Sheriff Al Nienhuis' department have seized a large quantity of fentanyl. In the past year, there have been several fentanyl seizures. The dangers posed by such drugs cannot be understated and it is a testament to the hard work of Hernando County deputies that they were able to make this latest bust and help safeguard the public from further harm.
