Genetically engineered antibodies could be used to prevent MRSA

By: April Carson

A strain of bacteria exists that is resistant to most antibiotics, but there is a potential treatment in the form of antibody therapy. Although the treatment has only been tested on mice so far, it has shown effectiveness against the bacteria and may hold promise for human use. In 2019, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) caused the death of over 100,000 people globally. This bacteria has evolved to resist all but seven types of antibiotics, making it incredibly dangerous. To address the MRSA problem, antibody therapy may be a potential solution.

Researchers have created an antibody called ATA-21 that can bind to and neutralize the bacteria's toxins, preventing them from causing infection. The antibody has been tested in mice, with encouraging results — it reduced their mortality rate by up to 90% when administered within 24 hours of infection.

Victor Torres from NYU Langone Health in New York explains that treating MRSA is difficult because the organism is skilled at evading various immune responses, including the use of antibodies that detect and fight against pathogens.

To get around this, Torres and his colleagues created an antibody therapy that could better target the bacteria. It’s made from a human immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody fused to a fragment of a protein found on the surface of MRSA. The team tested this therapy in mice infected with MRSA and mice infected with a non-MRSA strain of bacteria. "The antibody was effective in both cases," said Torres.

The results, published in Nature Medicine, showed that the antibody therapy was able to reduce the amount of MRSA in infected mice by up to 75 percent after four days of treatment. It also reduced the severity of their symptoms and promoted faster healing. In comparison, mice treated with a control antibody had no such benefit. "This is a really exciting development, as it could provide an effective way to treat antibiotic-resistant infections," Torres said. "We are now working on clinical trials for humans."

Although these results are encouraging, the researchers note that much more work is needed before this treatment can be used in humans. Nevertheless, they believe that this type of antibody therapy could provide an effective way to fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This research highlights both the potential and the need for more advanced treatments to combat antibiotic resistance. With more research, antibody therapy could become a viable treatment option for treating MRSA in the future.

The findings of this study are particularly important because they demonstrate that it may be possible to develop an effective solution to fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Although there is still work to be done before this particular treatment is available to humans, the possibilities of antibody therapy provide a promising path forward in combating this growing health problem. Antibody therapy has already been shown to be effective against viruses such as influenza and HIV, and now it appears that it could be a powerful tool for fighting bacteria too. This research is an important step forward in the fight against antibiotic-resistant infections, and could ultimately save countless lives.
