A fifth-grader in Florida was arrested Saturday for allegedly threatening to carry out a large shooting via text messages, police said.
For making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting, the 10-year-old boy, a student at Patriot Elementary School in Cape Coral, was handcuffed and escorted inside a police car Saturday night.
“This student's conduct is nauseating, particularly in light of the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno stated. “Keeping our children secure is critical.”
The school district is cooperating with the ongoing investigation and counseling services are being offered to students, staff and families, a spokeswoman said.
The School Threat Enforcement Team at the sheriff's department was alerted to the disturbing communications, and the Youth Services Criminal Investigations Division took over the case due to the child's young age.
Sheriff Marceno explained that police were quick to investigate the mass shooting threats.
“We will have law and order in our schools! My staff didn't hesitate for even a second to investigate this menace...NONE AT ALL,” he added.
The statement came as authorities in Uvalde face mounting criticism for their response to the May 24 school shooting, with critics claiming that they waited roughly an hour for backup rather than immediately going into action against the gunman.
The Uvalde, Texas school shooting killed 19 fourth-graders and two teachers.
"We take these types of cases very seriously," Marceno said. "As a result of the swift actions by deputies and investigators, we were able to quickly determine the credibility of the threat."
The fifth grader's name has not been released due to his age. It is unclear if he will face any charges.
The Florida youngster was interviewed by detectives, who determined that there was probable cause to arrest him, according to police.
“Right now, you should not act like a small delinquent. It's not amusing,” Marceno said. “This kid made a fraudulent threat, and he's now experiencing genuine ramifications.”
The decision to arrest the fifth-grader was made in part because of the recent mass shootings, particularly the Elementary school massacre in Texas.
“This is a zero-tolerance policy,” Marceno said. “If you make a threat like this in Lee County, we will do everything in our power to find you and arrest you.”
Marceno said the state attorney's office will determine whether to file charges.
