Students in the Sunshine State will soon be learning to read, write, and calculate ROI. The new financial literacy requirement will help ensure that all graduates are ready for life after high school.
To graduate from high school in Florida, all students must complete and pass a simple financial literacy course under legislation signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday.
At a Tampa press conference on Tuesday, DeSantis said that the skills needed by the legislation will be "relevant in their lives regardless of what route they choose."
The course will be worth half a credit starting in the 2023-2024 school year, according to the Florida governor.
"We want to make sure that our students have the ability to manage their finances, understand credit, understand debt and be able to kind of navigate some of these things," said DeSantis.
“This will provide a foundation for students to learn about the fundamentals of money management— debt, balancing a checkbook, investing basics — which will serve them well throughout their lives.”
Yanely Espinal, a Brooklyn native who works with the organization Next Gen Personal Finance, also backed the spirit of the bill on Tuesday.
“My parents were immigrants, and we were in a cash-only home, so I understood how quickly the world of money was changing. And if we don't teach our kids to keep up, future generations will repeat cycles of poor financial literacy,” she continued.
Increasing numbers of states are attempting to include or require financial literacy courses in their school systems, worried about a dearth of basic money management skills among young Americans.
At least 22 states now have legislation related to financial literacy in schools, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. And that number is only going to grow, as more and more lawmakers come to see the value in giving young people the tools they need to make smart financial decisions.
