Last week, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. took voluntary action to recall four batches of Quinapril—a blood pressure medication—after the Food and Drug Administration raised potential concerns that it could increase cancer risks. This recall could potentially affect millions of Americans who take this drug to control their blood pressure.
Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s Quinapril tablets, sold in 20 mg and 40 mg varieties, have been identified as having a higher-than-acceptable level of nitrosamine impurity - N-Nitroso-Quinapril - present. Nitrosamine impurities, which are often found in cured and grilled meats, vegetables, and dairy products according to the recall statement, have become increasingly prevalent within consumables.
The recall was issued after the FDA determined that long-term exposure to this impurity could potentially cause cancer. The regulator warned that people should not stop taking their medication without consulting with a healthcare provider.
Doctors and patients are encouraged to talk to their pharmacists about obtaining an alternative drug in the meantime until more conclusive data is collected.
According to the recall statement, all individuals are subjected to some level of nitrosamines. However, the amount deemed safe by the FDA differs depending on whether it is being consumed as part of a meal or through medication.
Prolonged exposure to levels higher than what is considered acceptable may increase the risk of developing cancer. The FDA is continuing to evaluate the data and will provide updates when more information becomes available. In the meantime, it recommends that patients remain in contact with their healthcare providers to ensure safe and effective treatment.
It is important for people to remember that all medications carry some risk of side effects, so being informed about the potential risks can help individuals make informed decisions about their health and well-being.
There's no need for patients taking the medication to cease intake immediately, but it is recommended that they consult their healthcare provider about possible alternative treatments. The FDA is currently working to identify the root cause of the risk and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, individuals should continue to take their medications as prescribed and consult with their healthcare providers before making any changes. Remember that the risk of cancer has not been definitively established, and it is important to always weigh the benefits of a medication against its potential risks.
The recalled lots, available from March 2021 - September 2022 and expiring between December 2022 - March 2024 were distributed in 90-count bottles. Consumers who have purchased these products can contact the company for replacement or refund.
The FDA will continue to monitor the safety of these products, and provide updated information as it becomes available.
In September, Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced the cessation of its production of the drug in question and has since been cooperating with distributors to ensure that all recalled lots are returned.
The recall is yet another example of the FDA’s efforts to protect consumers from potentially harmful drugs.
The company declared that no cases of illness related to the recalled medicine have been reported at this time. Quinapril is used to reduce high blood pressure, and another drug maker was compelled to recall its lots of the same medication in October due to cancer risk associated with it.
