Elon Musk Has a New Date He Says He'll Land People on Mars

By: April Carson

The race to reach Mars is still on, but the predicted timings for this are being delayed, as the entrepreneur Elon Musk made clear with a very straightforward statement.

The billionaire CEO of SpaceX made a very public show of his Mars ambitions last year, when he unveiled a new spacecraft that he said would take humans to the red planet within a decade. But in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Musk admitted that this timeline was "optimistic".

Elon Musk is working on his Starship spacecraft to reach Mars, and he has stated that his ambitions even include founding a city on Mars. Elon Musk stated in December 2020 that the achievement of this milestone would be achieved between 2024 and 2026, when he was speaking about reaching the red planet with his SpaceX firm.

However, Musk and SpaceX have had to deal with several challenges, including a lawsuit filed by Jeff Bezos' United States aerospace transportation business, Blue Origin, against NASA.

The basis of this lawsuit is SpaceX's multi-million-dollar contract to develop Starship, which was awarded by NASA.

When will man reach Mars for Elon Musk?

Despite the challenges SpaceX has faced, Musk has not lost sight of the primary goal and simply delayed humans' arrival on Mars by three years.

"We're building the ship right now," he said. "I think we'll be able to do short flights, up and down, in the first half of next year."

While some people may view reaching Mars as a simple task, it has proven difficult for many others. The challenges SpaceX is facing will provide valuable experience for the company as it looks to continue its ambitious plans.

Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, revealed on Twitter that man would reach Mars in 2029, precisely 60 years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planted our flag there.

Although this spacecraft has yet to reach space, it has already accomplished several successful high-altitude flights for NASA, and the ultimate objective is to send humans to the moon for the agency before reaching Mars.

When is the best time to visit Mars?

In addition, there is no such thing as the ideal moment to go to Mars, because as Mars and Earth move around the sun, both planets approach each other and then separate, thus taking advantage of these windows is critical.

Musk's revised target for a manned Mars mission is 2026, which would be just in time for the next launch window. This would put the first humans on Mars just seven years from now. If all goes well, that is.

For the decade beginning in 2020, favorable windows for sending a spacecraft to Mars are only available by the end of this year, 2026, and 2028/2029. The next opportunity after that won't be until 2031.

It's an ambitious goal, and it'll require a lot of testing and development in the meantime. But if anyone can pull it off, it's likely Elon Musk.

He's already laid out the groundwork for getting people to Mars, with his plans for building a reusable rocket system. And he's not the only one who's thinking about it. Boeing and Lockheed Martin are also working on their own Mars mission plans.
