Nut November
On Thursday evening, another capsule containing four astronauts was successfully launched by SpaceX. While the mission went well, the crew stated that they saw something strange: a floating object passing by their spacecraft as they approached the station.
"It was very obvious," reports Commander Scott Tingle. "Unmistakable in the pitch darkness of orbit, a small bright object suddenly appeared and then rapidly passed us by."
Astronauts quickly took pictures of the strange intruder with their cameras, after which it disappeared from sight within ten minutes. In addition, astronauts also used a laser instrument to try and measure the speed of the object, estimating that it was traveling "at least 400 meters per second" but had no real way of determining this.
The astronauts are uncertain as to what they saw. NASA has said that there were no unusual objects for them to collide with during the docking process, although there may have been ice debris that was not caught on the radar.
NASA has repeatedly stated that the object did contain fuel, but even this is uncertain as it appeared to be moving at a speed "impossible" for current technology. It is likely that NASA will release more information about the sighting in future days.
“We detected an odd-shaped knob, though it's difficult to tell from a distance in our centerline camera viewpoint from the left to lower right of our sight,” Tom Marshburn, the pilot of Crew Dragon, informed SpaceX Mission Control. “It has vanished now.”
“It might have been a tiny nut,” he added.
Mystery Knob
According to The Washington Post, the crew was informed that the knob was probably safe and the remainder of the mission went smoothly. The capsule connected with the ISS about 263 miles above the Caribbean a few minutes later.
There is still no sign of what the object was, though it was almost certainly a piece of space debris flying by. After all, for decades, Earth's orbit has been clogged with trash from international space exploration.
There's so much, in fact, that NASA Administrator Bill Nelson slammed those who have contributed to the problem this summer, calling it "dishonorable" and "dangerous for anybody — including the United States — that has allowed space debris to be up there."
Still, we're not ready to give up hope of alien life. Perhaps the object is actually a UFO piloted by extraterrestrials.
We can only hope.
