A British scientist has claimed that new medicines capable of eradicating "zombie cells" from our bodies might allow people to live to 200 years old.
The Zombie cells are a type of senescent cell, which accumulate as we age and have been linked to age-related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease.
However, the new drugs - known as senolytics - can kill these cells, potentially leading to a major increase in life expectancy.
Dr Andrew Steele, a British computational biologist, has just published a new book on longevity and has said that senolytics - drugs that target cells that harm tissue function - may help us live longer.
“I don't believe there is any such thing as an absolute cap on how long we can live,” Dr. Steele said.
“Studies come out every few years that propose a fundamental limit on human longevity, but they're always missing one essential element: we've never tried treating the aging process before,” Dr Steele told MailOnline.
“The fact is, we don't really know what aging is. We describe it as a process of decline, but we don't really understand the mechanisms that cause it.
“If we can start to treat the causes of aging, then I believe we can start to extend life expectancy well beyond anything that has been proposed before.”
“I can't think of a medical or biological reason why someone couldn't live to 200,” he explained.
Dr. Steele highlighted the development of senolytics, which target senescent or ‘zombie' cells that stop dividing and accumulate before releasing compounds into our bodies that promote aging.
Pills to eliminate these cells from our bodies are already in the human trial stage and could be available within a decade, according on MailOnline.
In 2020, The Lancet published the first ‘proof' that senolytics can eliminate senescent cells.
According to the study, “Kirkland's team at Mayo Clinic has developed a new type of medicine that targets senescent cells.”
The researchers found that the drugs “significantly reduced frailty and improved physical function” in elderly mice.
“Overall, administration of senolytic agents and the clearance of senescent cells has been shown to improve physical performance and extend health span and longevity in mice.”
Billionaires including Jeff Bezos and Peter Thiel have invested in the drug since human trials of senolytic medications began, according to MailOnline.
The life-extending effects of the drugs have yet to be proven in humans, but if they are effective, it is possible that people could live to 200 years old or more.
The development of senolytic drugs is still in its early stages, and it will likely be many years before they are available to the general public. However, the potential for these drugs to extend human life by decades or even centuries is exciting, and they may one day revolutionize the way we think about aging.
Both Bezos and Thiel's representatives have been contacted by LADbible, which has requested comments.
When it comes to extending human life, Dr. Steele cited a research on reptiles while attempting to grow people's longevity.
He stated that a human cell in a petri dish would divide approximately 50 times before stopping, whereas a Galapagos tortoise cell multiplies hundreds of time.
Galapagos tortoises live up to 120 years and are just one of a slew of long-living reptiles that may assist scientists in understanding the manner our cells age.
On the topic of bringing humans to an age of 200, Dr. Steele said: "I think it's realistic."
"It won't be easy, and it certainly won't be quick – but I believe we can do it."
There are a number of different drugs that are currently being developed which have the potential to greatly extended the human lifespan.
