Thousands of fentanyl pills were discovered inside a box of "Classic Legos" by a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) task force. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. It is a schedule II prescription drug, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and can lead to severe psychological or physical dependence. The drug is often used to treat pain associated with cancer, but it is also sometimes prescribed for other types of chronic pain.
A system of drug dealers seems to be selling fentanyl in schools and neighborhoods, which is causing more damage as the synthetic opioid crisis continues.
On Tuesday, a DEA task force discovered 15,000 fentanyl pills packed into two black bags inside a Legos box in the back of a rented car near Hudson Yards.
Approximately 7 p.m., the force discovered the box. It's been only a handful of weeks since investigators found thousands of fentanyl pills in candy packaging, so with Halloween just around the corner, DEA agents are cautioning society about this epidemic.
The pills were individually wrapped in cellophane and stamped with a blue "devil" logo. Investigators believe that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) may have finally made a dent in the organization responsible for the majority of the country's fentanyl trafficking.
Schools and neighborhoods are being hit hard by the synthetic opioid crisis as a system of drug dealers seems to be selling fentanyl in these areas. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is often prescribed to treat pain associated with cancer, but it can also be used to manage other types of chronic pain. The DEA has issued a warning to parents and guardians about the dangers of this drug.
The DEA's recent investigation found that many of the pills being sold as fentanyl are actually made in China. The pills are often shipped to the United States through the mail. Once they arrive, they are distributed to dealers who then sell them to users.
The most significant hazard to public health and safety, according to the DEA, is fentanyl. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Special Agent Frank Tarentino of the New York Post reports. Every day we have more seizures. In New York City, a drug overdose occurs every three hours. Nationally it's every five minutes; 295 people die daily due to overdoses, according to CDC data.
The DEA has warned that even a small amount of fentanyl can be deadly. Fentanyl pills are often disguised as other drugs, such as oxycodone or Xanax. Sometimes they are sold as heroin. They can be white, brown, or blue.
