Dad uses stretch limo to take children to school amid bus driver shortage

By: April Carson

A father in Ohio is now driving his children to school in his family's stretch limousine as a result of the countrywide bus driver shortage.

Last Friday, Columbus father and son duo Ryan and Brian Rogers shared a post to Facebook offering free transportation to local children via his father's limousine service using a borrowed vehicle from the business.

It was only a few days before that, on April 8th, that he had been playing with his two friends. On Monday, he took 25 youngsters to school and the next day assisted 42 children.

“People are shocked and say, ‘Who is this guy who's pulling up in a limousine?’ And they ask, ‘Who's in the back seat?,'” he continued.

"Let us help the community, let us stop this violence!" Those are the kinds of things that people say all the time.

“However, I believe that ending the violence is taking a major step by getting kids to school rather than allowing them to skip school and get into trouble,” Mr. Rogers added.

After seeing a young girl shed tears of joy because she was able to go to school, Mr. Rogers became emotional.

A board meeting was told last week that Columbus City Schools has a severe driver shortage, with as many as 20% of drivers called in sick on one occasion.

The nationwide bus driver scarcity is also affecting college students' participation in Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, and other states. It's another barrier to getting kids back into classes after the epidemic delays.

During the Covid-enforced school closures of 2020 and 2021, many drivers were furloughed or retired, leaving parents without any alternatives for getting their children to school.

“The busses don't run in the morning,” Quetta Jaye of Columbus informed NBC12.

“They don't come at night, as though they didn't have any drivers for our children to get to and from school.”

She went on to comment that Mr. Rogers was a “gift” and that he was assisting many families.

While some parents are praising Mr. Rogers, the limo is not permitted for student transportation, according to school officials.
