China's 'Artificial Sun' Breaks Records, Burning Five Times Hotter Than The Real Thing

By: April Carson

Are you ready to be astonished? According to a Xinhua report, China's "artificial sun," a nuclear fusion tokamak reactor with the potential to generate almost limitless amounts of emission-free energy, set a new milestone on Thursday by operating at a high-plasma temperature for 1,056 seconds.

That translates to 83.5 minutes and is a full five-minute improvement over the previous record set just last week , when it ran for 650 seconds at an ultrahigh temperature of 50 million degrees Celsius, or 122 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Experts hope that with such physics experiments, scientists will eventually be able to develop new sources of power that could help mitigate the looming energy crisis as fossil fuels run out.

The acronym EAST refers to the tokamak reactor, which is known as EAST. It's located in Hefei, China, and it just set a new world record by operating for 101 seconds at a temperature of 216 million degrees Fahrenheit (120 million degrees Celsius).

The EAST tokamak reactor.

The EAST is a project meant to mimic the sun and stars that is part of several worldwide tokamak fusion projects. When two atoms collide, releasing energy in the form of a heavier nucleus, fusion occurs. Large amounts of energy are released when this happens. A number of high-profile fusion projects are attempting to use this energy to free the world from its reliance on fossil fuels.

The EAST experiment has made significant strides toward commercial nuclear fusion, according to CGTN. These include generating a one-hundred-million-degree temperature for a 1000 seconds and generating a one-million-amp current. The EAST scientists are presently working to accomplish these two goals at the same time.

The Fusion Race Is Under The microscope, But It Still Has A Long Way To Go

To function, scientists must produce more energy than fusion reactors consume. Creating more energy than that used has been impossible thus far (some Tesla theorists will quarrel with you for hours over this), but new scientific breakthroughs are bringing the scientific community one step closer to achieving it.

Another example of a technology that creates more energy than it consumes is Commonwealth Fusion Systems' Hyperion engine, which was first unveiled in January 2017. They announced in September that they had tested a magnet with a magnetic strength of 20 Teslas and a power requirement of just 30 watts.

Artificial suns that could someday power entire cities will provide a far more efficient and cost-effective source of energy than present solar technology. The scientific community will be able to steadily improve the effectiveness of these "artificial suns," lowering the large amount of energy required to run them in the first place.

Researchers may be able to soon unleash net-fusion energy on the planet as a consequence of their work, eventually resulting in a fossil-fuel less world. What if it were possible?
