The organization Black Lives Matter donated millions to a Canadian charity run by the wife of its co-founder, according to public records, in order to acquire a sprawling mansion that had previously served as the Communist Party's headquarters.
The news of the transfer of money to the Canadian organization has raised further questions about transparency and accountability within Black Lives Matter, coming days after auditors said an inquiry into the handling of BLM's $60 million war chest was necessary, and less than a year since Cullors was forced to step down amid allegations regarding her own property empire.
BLM Canada announced in July 2021 that it had recently acquired a three-story Victorian mansion in the Baldwin Village region of Toronto, close to downtown. The Communist Party's former headquarters was a red brick house with imposing proportions.
On Saturday, the Post revealed that Black Lives Matter raised the money to buy the property and funneled it from the international network to M4BJ, a Toronto-based non-profit set up by Janaya Khan and other Canadian activists.
Khan is married to Patrisse Khan-Cullors, a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation Network and self-avowed Marxist. In 2016, the pair tied the knot and now have two children.
On a speakers' website, Khan is referred to as a 'black, LGBTQ gender-nonconforming activist, fierce Afrofuturist and social-justice educator who offers an enlightening perspective on police brutality and structural racism.'
In May 2021, Patrice Cullors resigned as executive director of the Black Lives Matter Global Network amid controversy surrounding her $3.2 million real estate empire.
It was uncertain if the money was transferred from BLMGN to M4BJ before or after Cullors resigned, and why it went to M4BJ rather than directly to Canada's BLM.
“It was unethical for BLM Canada to take money from the BLM Global Network for a facility without consulting the community,” declared Sarah Jama earlier this month. “It goes against the grain of movement building for BLM Canada to refuse to answer questions from young black organizers.”
The purchase of this Toronto property came to light amid mounting concerns over the US activist group’s lack or transparency in its finances. The Wildseed Centre for Art and Activism houses exhibits that explore environmental justice, animal rights issues like vegetarianism and veganism.
