Astronomers Uncover 21 Rare Binary Systems with Hidden Neutron Stars

Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery, revealing 21 rare binary systems where sun-like stars orbit hidden neutron stars—extremely dense and compact objects often considered the remnants of supernova explosions. One of these neutron stars is among the most massive ever recorded, adding another layer of intrigue to this significant find.


The Rarity of Neutron Star-Sun-like Star Binaries


Our sun exists as a singleton, but at least half of all stars with similar mass are part of binary systems. This proportion rises to 75% for more massive stars, leading to numerous binary systems featuring stellar remnants like neutron stars and black holes. Despite this, binary configurations of neutron stars orbiting sun-like stars have remained exceedingly rare. Thanks to the European Space Agency's (ESA) Gaia spacecraft, astronomers have now identified a new population of these elusive binaries.


Challenging Existing Models


Neutron stars are often found in close proximity to ordinary stars, engaging in a cosmic vampirism where they siphon off material from their companions. What sets these newly discovered binaries apart is their wide separation, ranging from 300 to 1,000 times the size of the stars themselves. This discovery challenges existing models of binary evolution, which predict much tighter orbits for such systems.


"Binary evolution models predict that neutron star and normal star binaries should be born mainly in tight orbits, with the neutron star and companion almost touching," says Kareem El-Badry, discovery team leader and researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "These binaries are much wider than this, suggesting alternative formation models may be needed."


The Birth of a Neutron Star


Neutron stars are created when stars at least eight times the mass of the sun exhaust their nuclear fusion fuel, causing a core collapse. This collapse results in a supernova explosion, blowing away the star's outer layers and leaving behind a dense core with a mass between one and two times that of the sun, but only about 12 miles wide. One of the neutron stars in this discovery boasts a mass of 1.9 times that of the sun, making it one of the most massive neutron stars observed to date.


Survival Against the Odds


These binaries raise significant questions about how they survive the tumultuous transformation of one star into a neutron star. The process typically involves violent interactions, with the massive star potentially engulfing its smaller companion. The ensuing supernova blast should theoretically eject the smaller star, ending the binary system. However, these new discoveries suggest that some binaries can endure these cataclysmic events, challenging current models.


"The discovery of these new systems shows that at least some binaries survive these cataclysmic processes, even though models cannot yet fully explain how," El-Badry says.


The Quiet Neutron Stars


Traditionally, neutron stars orbiting main sequence stars have been identified through their 'vampiric' behavior, stripping material from their companions and creating conspicuous X-ray and radio emissions. These emissions result from the formation of an accretion disk, where the material's angular momentum prevents it from falling straight into the neutron star. The energetic interaction between the neutron star and the accretion disk can release immense energy, making these binaries highly visible.


However, the newly discovered binaries lack such emissions, making them more elusive. "Most neutron star binaries are discovered via X-rays or radio data resulting from current or past accretion," El-Badry explains. "These neutron stars have not accreted anything and don’t produce X-rays or radio at a detectable level, so they’re harder to find."

This discovery opens a new frontier in the study of binary systems and stellar evolution, highlighting the need for revised models to explain the formation and survival of such widely separated neutron star-normal star binaries. As astronomers continue to explore these systems, they may uncover further insights into the complex life cycles of stars and the intricate dance of celestial bodies in our universe.
