Archaeologists Uncover a Hidden 7,000-Year-Old Settlement Using Cosmic Rays

This poses a significant challenge for archaeologists working in areas like the Dispilio site on Lake Orestida in northern Greece, part of the southern Balkan region. Traditional methods could offer only approximate dates, far from the precise timeline researchers sought.


Harnessing Cosmic Rays: The Miyake Events


To overcome this challenge, Maczkowski and his team turned to an innovative approach involving cosmic rays, specifically prehistoric solar flare events known as Miyake events. Discovered by Japanese physicist Fusa Miyake in 2012, these events significantly increase carbon-14 content in trees, providing crucial archaeological timestamps. In 2022, researchers from ETH Zurich identified a Miyake event in 5259 BCE, closely aligning with the establishment of the Dispilio settlement.


Uncovering the Settlement's Timeline


By analyzing 787 pieces of timber from the Dispilio site, the team from the University of Bern created a growth ring chronology spanning around three centuries and concluding in 5140 BCE. This allowed them to map out various building phases of the settlement between 5328 and 5140 BCE. Their findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, not only provided a more accurate timeline for Dispilio but also opened new avenues for archaeological research in the region.


Implications for Future Discoveries


The successful application of cosmic ray analysis to date the Dispilio settlement represents a significant breakthrough. It enhances our ability to pinpoint historical timelines with greater accuracy, especially in regions where traditional methods fall short. This advancement could potentially lead to the identification and dating of other artifacts and settlements across the Mediterranean and beyond, deepening our understanding of prehistoric human activity.


While we may never have time machines, the ingenuity and determination of scientists continue to push the boundaries of archaeological research.
