On Wednesday, a woman in West Virginia shot and killed another male who was firing an AR-15-style rifle into a crowd of people.
The woman, who has not been identified, was lawfully carrying a pistol when the man began shooting into the crowd. She then shot and killed him.
Dennis Butler, 37, was identified as the gunman who opened fire.
Outside a Renaissance Circle apartment complex, a group of people had gathered to celebrate a birthday and commencement.
This is yet another example of how effective firearms can be in self-defense situations. It also highlights the importance of responsible gun ownership and carrying a firearm for self-protection.
The fact that she was carrying a gun lawfully saved lives. This is a prime example of why the Second Amendment is so important. The right to bear arms is essential for self-defense.
According to authorities, Butler had been at the apartment complex earlier in the evening in a vehicle and was told to decrease his speed since children were playing.
He departed, only to return and park in front of the complex before opening fire.
The woman who shot him was at the party. She drew a pistol and shot Butler to stop the attack. Butler was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no casualties among the guests.
The woman then waited for the police to arrive, and she and several witnesses have assisted with the inquiry.
"Instead of running from the danger, she confronted it and saved a lot of lives last night," Chief Tony Hazelett said.
According to Hazelett, no charges would be filed against the woman.
It's still early in the investigation, but the preliminary evidence suggests that the woman who shot Butler was acting in self-defense and defense of others. The fact that she was carrying a pistol lawfully also contributed to the decision not to charge her.
In an interview with "Talkline" on MetroNews Friday, Police Chief Tyke Hunt said that Butler had been to prison "a few times" and was a convicted offender.
"We did a little bit of research on him and he's had some extensive criminal history," Hunt said.
According to Hunt, Butler had violated the law by having the weapon he fired. The issue is still under investigation, according to Hunt.
This is a tragedy that could have been much worse had she not been armed and able to defend herself and the other guests, many people could have been killed or injured if she had not been there to stop the shooter.
While carrying a gun comes with great responsibility, it is clear that in this case, it saved lives.
