Jerry Windle was a gay man who had never been in a relationship. He spent the better part of his life hearing others say he would never be a dad. Jerry himself didn't have much faith in his chances of ever becoming a parent. But one day, everything changed. He did father a child, and this isn't all. His adoptive kid became an Olympic athlete! Jerry is undoubtedly a very proud dad today.
In real life, his tale as a parent is nothing short of a fairytale.
THE FIRST CHAPTER IN JERRY AND JORDAN’S STORY
The story of Mr. Windle is a sad tale. He was unmarried and gay, though he always wanted to be a father. However, in his own country, the United States, adoption was proving to be quite tough for him.
Then, one day, Jerry was flipping through a magazine when he came across an article that piqued his interest. According to an interview with Today, the tale mentioned a guy who had taken in a Cambodian kid without revealing if there was a mother. It had also addressed the affectionate bond between the son and father, which sparked something in his mind.
Jerry called the adoption service listed in the story and spoke with a representative. He mentioned the article and inquired if one person alone could adopt one of their children. He was told that it was possible.
In June of 2000, Jerry traveled to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. He took 2-year-old Jordan, the son he would soon adopt, from the Cambodian orphanage. Since his biological parents in Sihanoukville had perished, he'd been living at the institution. The kid, on the other hand, was in pretty bad shape. Jordan had severe infections, micronutrient deficiencies, and scabies. The infant weighed only 16 pounds.
It was so bad that Jerry had no idea if the youngster would survive. But that day, Jerry made a commitment:
“I promised him that I would do everything that I could, that he wouldn’t ever have to suffer again. I would make every sacrifice I could as a parent to get him every opportunity.”
Jordan's arrival in Florida with his father was difficult. Apart from the fact that he had a severe illness, Jordan didn't know English. So the two communicated using sign language until Jordan learned English.
The Olympics were on the radar for Jordan at the ripe old age of seven. When Tim O'Brien, Ron O'Brien's son, met him at a diving camp, he became intrigued. Jordan then signed up for an intensive diving program. He continued to achieve, and he began to enjoy it. He had taken part in three Olympic trials before he was 13 years old.
Today, Jordan Windle is a success story. He has represented the United States as a member of the Diving Team in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics after achieving success in his third trial. He reached all the way to the final round before being eliminated.
COVID restrictions limited Jerry's ability to witness his son compete in the Games live. However, that did not prevent Jordan from wishing that his father was there with him. He'd expressed a desire to make his adoptive father proud, according on what he said before.
He has not forgotten his homeland, Cambodia. He has a tattoo of the Cambodian flag on his arm so that the audience may see it while he is diving. In 2011, the pair collaborated on a children's book called "An Orphan No More: The True Story of a Boy," which chronicled their tale.
A parent's love is mightily strong, and one does not need to be the biological parent to feel the same way about someone as a kid. The tale of Jerry and Jordan Windle is proof of that.
