The study proposes that within 250 million years, Earth's continents will merge to form a new supercontinent, Pangea Ultima. This isn’t the first time scientists have suggested the future formation of a supercontinent, but this study's projections stand out due to the grim predictions regarding the resulting extreme climate swings.
Extreme Climate Changes
The formation of a supercontinent will trigger drastic shifts in Earth's climate. Changes in volcanic rifting and outgassing, along with an increase in solar energy, could lead to extreme warming. Average temperatures could rise to between 104 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit, creating an environment too hostile for mammals to survive.
The study notes that these extreme changes in temperature could lead to a climate tipping point, causing a mass extinction event. While mammals have shown adaptability to temperature changes, such extremes would likely be too much for them to handle.
Swinging Between Hot and Cold
The researchers emphasize that the supercontinent formation will cause Earth to swing between extremes of hot and cold. Not only would a warming climate threaten life, but a cooling climate could also push the planet into a spiral. For example, cold conditions could lead to the dormancy of plants and the freezing of water sources, while extreme heat would dry up water supplies and impact plant life.

The study's findings indicate that no future scenario will remain habitable for humans. These projected changes in Earth’s climate and environmental conditions pose significant challenges for the future of life on the planet.
While these predictions are set in a timeline far beyond the current lifespan of any human being, the research serves as a sobering reminder of the complex relationship between tectonic movements, climate, and life on Earth. It underscores the importance of understanding and mitigating the impacts of our current climate crisis to secure a better future for all life forms on Earth.
