A man amasses $122 million by simply asking Google and Facebook for money

By: April Carson

A man from Lithuania admitted to stealing $122 million from Google and Facebook by sending false invoices between 2013 and 2015. Evaldas Rimasauskas managed to steal $99 million dollars form Facebook and $23 million dollars from google by simply taking advantage of their trusting natures- he sent them bills for services they had not requested. To the amazement of many, both companies paid in full without question.

The invoices were sent alongside additional fraudulent paperwork, including contracts and forged letters, to create an appearance of legitimacy. Rimasauskas even created fake emails that looked like they came from corporate executives to back up his demands for payment.

Despite the sophisticated nature of the scam, it ultimately came down to one thing: both Facebook and Google trusted Evaldas Rimasauskas implicitly, and failed to question his billing. This trust allowed him to walk away with over $100 million dollars that didn't belong to him- all without ever raising a red flag.

Rimasauskas's audacious scheme was strengthened by him pretending to be Taiwanese hardware company Quanta Computer Inc. To add more credibility to his story, he even registered a company of that name in Latvia. This provided him with all the documentation he needed to make his case when he presented invoices to Facebook and Google for services that were never actually rendered.

Rimasauskas was finally caught when an auditor at Facebook became suspicious of some of the invoices. A closer look revealed that the bank account tied to the invoices was registered under Rimasauskas' name, not Quanta Computer Inc. as he had claimed.

So foolproof was his scheme, that not a single person at Facebook or Google There were no checks to see if Rimasauskas's invoices were even legitimate. They just paid them. Rimasauskas then transferred the money into bogus bank accounts in Cyprus, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Latvia.

Thankfully, he was eventually caught by Google red-handed and now faces charges of US wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and money laundering. By agreeing to forfeit $50 million, he could face up to 30 years in prison come his sentencing on July 29th.

Of course, this isn't the first time someone has scammed Facebook or Google out of millions of dollars. Just last year, an Indian man named Nikhil Kohli managed to get his hands on $100 million from the social media giant by posing as a hardware vendor. He too used fake invoices to get his hands on the money.
