A fifth-grade teacher was arrested after confessing to an active "kill list" of students and staff

By: April Carson

A fifth grade teacher was arrested after telling one of her students that she had created a "kill list" with the names of other students and teachers.

Around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the East Chicago Police Department was contacted by the St. Stanislaus School principal and assistant principle regarding a threat against fifth grade teacher Angelica Carrasquillo-Torres, 25 years old from Griffith, Indiana that they had found out about earlier in the day.

The school officials had been contacted by a student who reported that Carrasquillo-Torres had told her about the "kill list" during class.

The East Chicago Police Department released a statement on social media stating that at approximately 12:45 p.m., a 5th grade student told his/her Counselor that their 5th grade teacher had made comments to him/her about killing herself, students, and staff at St. Stanislaus School. The teacher reportedly further told the student that she had a list and that he/she was on the bottom of said list.

The student immediately reported this information to the school administration who in turn contacted the East Chicago Police Department.

When officers arrived at the school, they made contact with the teacher who was still in her classroom. After being read her Miranda rights, the teacher reportedly confessed to making the comments and also showed officers a hand-written "kill list" which contained the names of several students and staff.

The teacher in question was immediately escorted to the principal's office after making disturbing statements to a student. The teacher admitted to making the statements and confirmed that she had a "kill list."

As confirmed by authorities, during the conversation the teacher named a specific student that was on her list; however, she did not provide said list to anyone. The Principal then advised the teacher to leave immediately and not come back until further notice whilst they investigate the situation.

The East Chicago Police Department revealed that the school didn't notify them about the situation until 4 hours after it happened. The teacher was allowed to leave, but once officers were finally told, they contacted the Criminal Investigation Division right away. The Prosecutor's Office then issued an emergency detention order for the teacher.

On Thursday at 11:15 a.m., Carrasquillo-Torres was arrested by the East Chicago Police Department.

Although authorities have not been able to determine if Carrasquillo-Torres has received legal representation, the investigation is still in effect and no additional information or comments will be made public until further notice.

Carrasquillo-Torres is currently being held at the Lake County Jail on a $10 million bail. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.

The school district has not released any additional information at this time.
