A modern-day gold rush has been discovered on a Northern California property: $10 million in rare, mint-condition gold coins have been hidden in the shade of an old tree.
Almost all of the 1,427 coins, which date from 1847 to 1894 and are in mint condition, have been certified by Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated them.
While the face value of the gold coins adds up to roughly $27,000, some of them are so unique that coin experts estimate they may sell for over $1 million each.
"I don't like to use the term once-in-a-lifetime for anything, but you won't get another chance to deal with something like this. "It's as if they discovered the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow," said veteran numismatist Don Kagin, who is representing the discoverers.
When asked about the married couple, Kagin, who has spent his entire life in the rare-coin business and is now old enough to be their great-grandfather, would offer little more than that they are a husband and wife in their midforties with several years of residence on the rural property where the coins were discovered.
They have no clue who put them there, he explained.
The two individuals, who live in the area, are interested in selling their land to a private buyer or developer. They do not want to be recognized because they fear a modern-day prospector armed with a metal detector would return and try to cash in on the gold rush that has been going on for more than 30 years.
The coins have been locked up in a bank vault since being discovered. They are for sale, but at a price that would require the buyer to be sitting on a gold mine.
"They want $10 million per sabio ," said the source, referring to the Spanish word for ounce. "More if it weights less."
All of the 1,427 coins have been graded and stamped by a leading coin dealer – who wishes to remain anonymous – as authentic.
"The face value of these coins would be around $28 million if they were put into circulation," he said. "But the par value of a gold coin is just that – its face value. In reality, these coins are worth much more because they are in such good condition."
